Trailer looks pretty good. Robert Pattinson gives a haunted vibe with the eye make-up and 90's music in the soundtrack reminiscent of the movie THE CROW (1994). I like that Batman is depicted as working with the police as a detective, which should be the norm, instead of being hunted by them which only became the norm after the influence of THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS comic book. It looks as grounded or even more grounded in the real world than the Christopher Nolan films, which I like. Batman is shown wearing regular boots, which implies it is early in his career and he's still in development. It looks like Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman and maybe even the Joker are in this, since those goons look like Joker henchmen to me. I hope they don't overload it with the villains which is a common flaw of superhero movies. I'm going to guess that the Joker is only alluded to in this one and kept off stage. It looks like this movie is taking influences from BATMAN: YEAR ONE, BATMAN: EARTH ONE and THE LONG HALLOWEEN. Here is my prediction: the Riddler uses suicide bombers and clues to reveal evidence of corrupt people in power which challenges Batman's idea of what exactly he is fighting for... If so, that is very intriguing. The theme could be that Batman's rogues gallery are revealed to not be the true villains of the movie, or at least the worst villains, since they aren't nearly as bad as corrupt people in power who are supposedly working for the law.
I also like that the title THE BATMAN hearkens back to his earliest appearances in DETECTIVE COMICS.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the Riddler even moreso than the Joker may be Batman's most definitive arch-enemy. Why? Because if the Riddler is a criminal who is the world's greatest riddler, whom the police need Batman's help with, then solving the Riddler's clues and stopping him earns Batman the title of world's greatest detective. And that should be the central core of Batman's identity and what he is known for: a crime-fighting intellect par excellence. What should make Batman scary to criminals, moreso than his dark outfit, ability to deliver a beat-down, or expensive gadgets, is that at the end of the day he's smarter than you.
