Rolf was a minor character in the early Greyhawk campaign, but his rather amusing fate does merit some mention. Rolf was a magic-user played by A. Mark Ratner. After adventuring some time, and gaining some levels, Rolf acquired several henchmen, an apprentice magic-user, a cleric, and a fighter. While adventuring in the Greyhawk dungeons with his henchmen, Rolf discovered a statue of a monster. While they were investigating, the statue animated and Rolf got turned to stone. The monster than escaped into the dungeons. Rolf’s henchmen lugged their petrified employer back to the tower of the wizard Klinchak in the City of Greyhawk to get him returned to normal.
Klinchak, and his assistant, were the main NPC wizards the early PCs dealt with while adventuring in the Greyhawk campaign. They would identify, and buy or trade items with the PCs, and cast spells like Stone to Flesh on players that needed it. Their services were not cheap though, and they were often a source of annoyance for the players, especially the assistant, who was on the greedy side, and enjoyed playing pranks on the characters who didn’t grease his palms sufficiently.
Klinchak attempted to cast the proper spell to return Rolf to his natural state, but the spell failed. The wizard then notified the henchmen, that in order to return Rolf to flesh and blood, they would need to bring back the creature they encountered that resulted in his petrification. Rolf’s henchmen then returned to the dungeons to attempt to track the original beast down. Unfortunately, they failed, and were all killed while making the attempt.
After the henchmen failed to return, Klinchak placed the petrified magic-user in his garden as a decoration. After a while, he made Rolf into a fountain, which he put in the pool in his garden, with water pouring out of the statue’s mouth. Rolf and Klinchak’s apprentice had never been overly fond of each other, and anytime the apprentice came near the statue, it would try to spit water on him.
