I disagree with anyone who thinks a flaw of AD&D was EGG's love of big words. That is part of its charm and one of the reasons the 1st edition DMG is considered a classic. What is called High Gygaxian contributed to my own vocabulary and love of archaic words. Some may think the language in 2nd edition was easier to understand, but in retrospect was a blandification of what had once been a distinct voice and vision. This isn't to say 1st edition AD&D was without flaws, but I'd say they were more along the lines of what EGG was already not using in practice, such as psionics, weapon vs. armor adjustments, speed factors, weaponless combat, etc. If you simply drop a few things, AD&D is close to being a perfect game that is difficult to improve upon. UNEARTHED ARCANA proved this to me, but I simply regard it is an elaborate set of optional house rules. Most of us tend to think of what we started with, or close to it, is what is best.

Its hard to imagine starting on bad D&D without Gygax D&D being readily at hand for a switch off. The 81 basic, 83-86 Mentzer series and early 2E players could but not so easy for the late 2E revised (1995) and WOTC D&D people so that is the gap. Their expectations are a different sort with "crawls" being the key term for action.
In regards to the arrogance that 2E contributors give off in general, its one of identity, I believe that this exists because they have to redirect attention to get more credit for themselves.
In regards to specifics, in his case, he did add to the outward feeling that D&D was somehow intact in 1989 or so and that really effects my opinion as I went out of my way to keep on spending to not miss something as the flow of quality was so weak.

Okay, I reviewed it. Basically, a con mover and shaker misinterpreted his language, according to him, and that raised some eyebrows. Then a Dragonsfoot message about a production of his being attacked non-stop and him telling someone to lay off didn't lay off and him blowing steam. He was banned and then later Mentzer says it wasn't him. I don't know. The first accuser says Gary is a scumbag so I'll place her firmly on the 9th level of hell. The Dragonsfoot thing seems like its a co-worker thing from the details so is it irrelevant even if true?
