I love this movie so much. I just rewatched it, Obviously, it was influenced by old-fashioned ghost stories like those by Ambrose Bierce and THE TURN OF THE SCREW by Henry James. Nicole Kidman's performance as Grace is perfect. The supporting cast is good also, especially the daughter and nanny. The cinematography, sets, and costumes perfectly capture that old-fashioned British ghost story atmosphere. It's one of those movies I enjoy more on second and subsequent viewings, because I admire the craftmanship and thoughtfulness put into the script. For example, the focus on religion, studying the Bible and the afterlife. There is a scene when the daughter Anne is reading the story of Abraham preparing to sacrifice Isaac to God... Anne gives hints throughout the movie that she knows the truth of what is going on, but Grace keeps punishing her for it and says "She's got to learn to swallow her pride and ask for forgiveness." Even her name 'Grace' seems carefully chosen.
