I just finished this graphic novel collected from a series first published in 2014, written by Mark Millar and illustrated by Goran Parlov. It is a loving homage to pulp heroes of the sword & planet genre like John Carter, Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon. The main character, Duke McQueen (the name sounds like it may be a parody, but it is not) is like a mash-up of those three characters. But the story is not just an imitation, it transcends the originals and adds new elements. The set up is that after having all of these adventures on another planet and becoming its greatest hero he returns to earth, gets married, has kids and becomes an old man. The story is so well done and maybe Millar's best... it has a lot of heart. The artwork is very reminiscent of Moebius, and I have to think that was intentional.
