I just recently re-watched THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS (2011) and THE CALL OF CTHULHU (2005) by the HPLHS. Gene recommended the latter years ago in the thread for THE RESURRECTED (1992). I agree it is good, and I like WHISPERER even better! The pretense of both movies is that they are produced to appear as if they were released the year the stories were published. So, THE CALL OF CTHULHU is black and white, silent, and shows a lot of influence from German Expressionism as if it came out in 1928. It sticks very close to the short story. THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS is black and white and a "talkie" since the story was published in 1931, the same year that classic movies like DRACULA, FRANKENSTEIN and KING KONG came out. Some of the actors have an affectation similar to Clark Gable or other actors of the period, and the special effects are a combination of practical and stop motion. It diverges more from the short story by adding characters and a "third act" to fill it out. In the making of featurette, they talk about wanting to do another movie like THE DUNWICH HORROR or THE SHADOW OVER INNSMOUTH and I wish they would. The HPLHS also produces DARK ADVENTURE RADIO THEATER which are adaptations of the stories in the old radio drama format, and I've been collecting those over the past few years and recommend them as well.
