I can’t see them hobnobbing either, but I can see them studying the same art. I think the Harry Potter analogy fits best. Do Harry and Draco hobnob? No. Do they study the same art in the same organization? Yes. Just like being a wizard and a Deatheater are separate, being a monk and being in the Scarlet Brotherhood are different. In the Harry Potter universe, being a wizard would be like being a monk, being a wizard that was also a Deatheater would be the monks that were in the Scarlet Brotherhood.

Well, we know that there are at least two Grand Masters of Flowers... Will Shatner in the Priceline.com commercial and the head of the Scarlet Brotherhood!

The head of the Scarlet Brotherhood is the Master of Autumn. But I wonder . . . did Gary change his mind on this? Why was this information omitted from the boxed set and only mentioned in the folio?

Okay, so I guess I'm not the only one who goes bananas from this sort of thing... LOL.

It's like Monks fighting on the Thief/Assassin table in the PH, but on the Cleric/Druid table in the DMG--which makes more sense to me for all of the Grand Masters of Flowers out there... (wait for it... ^__^)

The KuoToans have monk-like fighters called monitors as seen in D2 and D3. There are 3 evil monks in AGAINST THE CULT OF THE REPTILE GOD who worship the naga but considering the development of this module it seems it was half-heartedly "Greyhawk" from information garnered in Dragon magazine years later in the author's bio: The brief on N1 was initially developed by Kevin Hendryx IIRC (per some of the info from the auctions he did with Paul Stormberg). I'm multiple-personalities on monks. I like the idea of a single uber-hierarchy for the class because it fosters inter- and intra-order rivalries, and also help emphasize the monks' Lawful alignment. I also like the idea of there being many orders of monks, some of which are quite different from the "standard" option. I've used the original PHB monk for an order, the Dragon 53 monk for another, converted the monks in my Cthulhu-ized version of N1into CE monks with some varying powers, etc. too.

I have 3 orders of Monks in Oerik, so far, but Zuoken isn't one of them because his whole assignation of powers in the Box Set was a type-set error with the description of Xan Yae (read closely the description of Xan Yae--you see the Mental and Physical mastery where it belongs, the Shadow and Stealth tagged on at the end. This fits for a Lawful deity of Monks, not for a Neutral deity). He should have been a Neutral demigod of Stealth & Shadows (the line was transposed with "Mental and Physical Mastery" )--therefore, a Thief or Spy deity. Likewise, his affiliation with Xan Yae (besides being Bakluni) and his being one of the Nine imprisoned in the Castle were total 2E fabrications...

On Greyhawk Grognard site, it is attributed to EGG:
What I was contemplating was a non-Oriental sort of monk character to replace the clearly Eastern martial artist one featured. The class would likely have been a sort of dedicated warrior-spy with a few elements of the original Monk class, new abilities of more European sort to round it out. That way the Scarlet Brotherhood would not have had to lose its warrior-monk component.
Has anyone fleshed out a more European warrior-spy monk class that was contemplated by EGG?

I haven't. There has really not t been any demand for it at my games, and I've always liked the monk as is.

I wonder if there are any ideas to mine from the Mythus or LA books?

I'm getting ready to start a fresh Greyhawk campaign, and I wanted to offer some expansion + I never used UA very much bc the main two campaigns I ran as DM in my youth were started from Holmes basic in late 70s then quickly to AD&D 1e through 1984. I like Trent's ideas about some additional expansion classes: bard revision, jester, mountebank - still considering mystic, + haven't seen 1e savant. I did have an archer PC in late campaign, but haven't tested hunter PC. All the new players have zero 1e experience, so I trying to set up for a good long term campaign.

And I'm entirely unfamiliar with Mythus and LA bc I was done running campaigns after 1984

My first PC experience was LBBs 0e. Went straight to DMing with B1 module in Holmes and never was PC after that

I've never tried to come up with a replacement monk class, for a couple of reasons. One is that I like the perverse irony of the Suel-supremacist Scarlet Brotherhood following a mystical tradition of "oriental" (i.e. Balkunish) origin. It reminds me of the weird/hokey mysticism of the Nazis and makes them seem more bizarre and cult-like (and mysterious - how, why, and when did they adopt this practice and to what end?). Secondly, I feel that nowadays Asian culture has permeated far enough into the mainstream in the west that there's no need to treat it as "exotic" or "other" or to segregate it into its own crypto-Asian part of the game-world. Especially in a fantasy world where magic allows faster communication and travel and where the cultures are assumed to be in something of a steady-state compared to RW history, it seems reasonable to assume a fairly large degree of cross-cultural exchange, and Asian-flavored monks in a generally European-flavored setting doesn't have to be strange or anomalous. If anything, trying to impose too much separation between disparate RW influences in a fantasy world leads to an over-emphasis on "historical accuracy" which (at least in my experience) tends to lead to boring and under-imagined "low fantasy" approach - like we saw way too much of from TSR in the post-Gary era.

I've got a couple but they're different enough to not be Scarlet Brotherhood so while they're "Western" fighting monks they're far from what was presented for SB which would be unknown. I'd have to put thought towards SB and the last time I did that I came up with a lost deity but it got put to the side. Need more development maybe I'll do an online article on the deity then have a special class that is related.
Right now in between chores I'm trying to start a new continuing article coming soon so maybe after that.
