Lots of exploring tonight. The party explored all of the dry passages in the Lesser Caverns. The mapping got pretty tough, and the missed the cockatrice lair because the maze of passages around it got too confusing. They gorgamira was taken out pretty quickly: bad save. Mike, Corbek the cleric, didn’t believe the dao illusions and successfully alerted most of the rest of the party. After dispatching two of the dao, the other two, badly wounded, surrendered to avoid being killed/sent back to the Earth Elemental Plane. The party let them live in exchange for identifying two magic items they found: a ring of protection +1 and boots of dancing, which they told them what they would do before the curse was activated (striding and springing). The xorn were tough. The party refused to pay them 300 coins and attacked. The fight was the toughest of the night and drained them of most of their spells and many hit points. The dancing boots kicked in here and contributed to the difficulties. The 18 500 gold piece gems was a nice reward though. Back to camp to rest after this.

I had them spinning like drills and slashing with their three claws before the bite, and falling by like tops when they died.

Nice way to make them distinctive. I like it. I just got two new xorn miniatures. I've always loved these sorts of monsters that provide an option to pay a toll or fight. Most players would rather die than pay!

Halfway through the fight, after a few bites, there were a few mumbles of, 'we should have paid the 300 coins'. It was a good encounter for dialogue, "Now we're going to eat all of your coins, and you too!" Etc.

A few characters gained levels after that session. Mironin the wizard henchman made 4th level. Felborg the thief henchman made 6th. Ember the cleric made 5th level, and Plasolder made 8th level.

I’ve slacked on a few session reports. The party is several sessions into the Greater Caverns. They started last night’s session lost and resource depleted after being teleported. Which happened right after they found a familiar part of the dungeon after being lost and resource depleted the first time... Player 1: “Hey, I recognize this part of the dungeon. We should go back and rest now.” Player 2: “Yeah, but let’s try that second set of doors we found first.” After they found their way back again, they actually almost tried it one more time, but came to their senses in time. Their paladin was killed by a rug of smothering. They had to use a raise dead scroll on the magic-user henchman killed by a chasme. The survivors thought the bigger loss was the efreeti got turned to stone by the dracolisk. Which made them so distraught the gave the thief henchman the flying carpet, 5,000 GPs, and told him to fly back to town to buy a stone to flesh scroll. Later on, out of the blue, one of the players said, “we’re never going to see that henchman again, are we?”

I did. The party did just bring him back to life, but on the other hand, he needed brought back to life after being killed by a horrid demonic fly. Also, he hasn’t been with them too long, he’s neutral, and he was just given a flying carpet and 5,000 GP.

Moments like that are what make AD&D superior to any other game.

In my mind, it was such a bad decision, he was gone, but I still made a loyalty check as a kind of saving throw against stupidity. The dice agreed with me.
