Joseph Bloch posted dungeon module #G1A - thoughts anyone?
See Greyhawk Grognard...

It seems like a quick expansion over the idea that there is more below G1 from the text. I'm not going to go in depth but it seems like its playable. Pros: Straightforward classic style presentation. A new monster. Cons: None really except suggesting Sean K. Reynolds might have had something interesting to say!

It seems decent, but I think I would remove the Drow from this level, because I like the idea holding off the direct Drow presence until D3. Maybe some indirect hints towards Drow instead without actual presence.

IIRC there were some other references to possible level contents, entrances/exits into the secondary level (but I could be thinking of the entries into the first dungeon level instead, will have to go look now...).

Yeah the drow reveal in G3 was the climax of the G series. Having them discovered in the first dungeon is a mistake, IMO.

I just want to add that I don't know anything about the person who designed this. I've seen the name over and over but I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between him or some other OSR leaning persona.
Is this the Pomarj 1991 Dragon article guy? I did a search and I'm not sure what I'm seeing some kind of controversy regarding a weird philosophy or something like that?

He’s had a blog called “Greyhawk Grognard” for a long time that purports to be devoted entirely to original/Gary Greyhawk but still treats all of the later Cook/Sargent/Moore/Reynolds/Mona/etc. garbage as “canon” and back-projects it onto the Gary era. His stuff is all set in 576-79 CY but it’s all about “filling in blanks” by importing stuff from later versions and harmonizing it with the Gary-era. So we get stuff from him like a “new” map of Greyhawk City that matches the outline from the City of Hawks map but is still keyed to all of the locations from the shitty TSR 2E boxed set, or a continuation of the “Greyhawk’s World” series from Dragon magazine covering the areas Gary and Rob didn’t get to that is nevertheless completely compatible with the “future history” of Greyhawk Wars et al.
It feels pernicious and wrong-headed to me, like he wants to have his cake of being a “grognard” and appealing to the Gary fans on the one hand but wants to eat it too by maintaining compatibility with and acknowledging the legitimacy of the later-era “official” stuff. He badly wants to do Greyhawk officially for 5th Edition and apparently thinks this is the best way to set himself up for that.

I see. I must have seen him on those old TSR to WOTC Greyhawk forums as an avatar. I just tuned out that whole canon scene because it felt too anti-Gary.

Honestly, the only one I remember was "chat demon" but the canon feeders all have the same torso it seems.

C'mon, Gary would be the first to approve of not alienating potential customers when it comes to commercial endeavours. As long as you don't sell out your own material there's nothing wrong with trying to be somewhat compatible with other versions. That said, I thought G1a wa perfectly OK but not something essential and I would remove the drow. Perhaps a mysterious drow brooch would work, though.

In regards to Greyhawk, its a sticky situation its like Gary was a promethean figure. He constantly moaned about lawyers. Kuntz has always been a mystery. As for myself, completely isolated non-joiner fan of such luminary characters. I have to judge all people as worthies. Eril Mona is not a worthy for example neither is Zeb Cook, Carl Sargent or Roger E. Moore. Any and all comers must be scrutinized because I hope they'll do the same for me. I saw the website YOUR DUNGEON IS SUCK horribly lampooning everyone including myself but I don't do shit like that. But I don't believe in the blessed either. While Frank Mentzer might be a somewhat worthy its not because of his recent sexist troubles its content based. He doesn't seem to be into aesthetics. That is is a major flaw for conveying fantasy.

In regards specifically to Joe Bloch attacking his character is not something that I want to do. Strange philosopher or otherwise, what the heck do I know? Content-wise is how he'll be looked at. And so far this G1A is better than anything I've seen from Moore or Sargent or Mona.
