This horror film is worth seeing - I didn't know any details beforehand, and it's best that way!

Ah, thanks! I was hoping it was good, and I was also trying to avoid spoilers or reviews.

It is a horror film, and it's more than that also.
It is a best actress caliber performance.
Elements of Greek tragedy.
It continues to haunt me...

I got a chance to see this today. Very reminiscent of the better end of horror films. There is a wee touch on HPL but not the mythos.

I saw this last night with some friends, and none of us had ever seen it before. I liked it more than anyone else. Their expectation was that it was going to be a scary movie but they found it depressing and only interesting at the very end. I liked it because the cinematography, music score and acting were all excellent, and there was obviously much thought put into it. There was lot of symbolism, small details and dual meanings... For example, there is the supernatural threat of witchcraft and demonic possession that overlays the mundane but equally horrible threat of mental illness and internal disintegration of a family. Isn't that something we all universally fear? That is disturbing on a much deeper level than jump scares. It reminded me of "The VVitch" and "The Babadook" and "the Shining" for those reasons, so I would rate this one as definitely worth watching. From a gaming perspective, I always like to see the way demons and witchcraft are portrayed, and this seems straight out of medieval lore.

My daughter explained this director was known for a short called THE STRANGE THING ABOUT THE JOHNSONS (2011). She was insisting that I had to watch. It was not really gory at all but it was more like skme kind of universal social horror.
The followup film MIDSOMMAR (2019), I enjoyed as well. It was like "Wicker Man Remake:The Apology".

I just rewatched this movie, and I think I liked it even better the second time. I like movies like this where they come right out and tell you everything but your mind only puts the pieces together later. Upon rewatching it is very clear that they tell you exactly what the grandmother did. When Annie is in the support group she mentions how her brother hanged himself at 16 after accusing their mother of "putting people inside him." Annie said "she was completely manipulative." And then later Annie says "I gave her my daughter who she immediately stabbed her hooks into." And in previous scenes, Annie says Charlie never cried as a child or even as a baby, and Charlie slept outside in the treehouse when it was cold but felt no discomfort. There are plenty of details even in the first act to tell you exactly what is going on.
