Elmo the Scout has four available weapon proficiency slots. The VOH module description depicts Elmo as having a {+1} battleaxe and a {+2} dagger only. UA states that rangers are required to take one of their original weapon proficiencies in some type of bow or crossbow. In the TOEE description for Elmo, it is added that he has a long bow and two score arrows, half of which are silver-tipped, which he does not take on adventures??? This seems somewhat odd - I understand Elmo has chain mail and shield, and he would need two hands to employ a long bow, but why keep such a weapon stored away if he is proficient and it could be useful?
I look at this longbow and arrow notes added in TOEE to Elmo's description as optional.
So, I elect Elmo is proficient in both battleaxe and dagger. Due to the UA note, he also is proficient in some type of bow or crossbow. Lastly, it is possible that he is also proficient in some sort of sword as well, given the UA notes, unless he is either proficient in longbow {I am following Trent's AD&D companion rules here, where longbow proficiency takes two slots} or else Elmo has a weapon specialization? {I'm assuming Elmo is not proficient in a composite bow type, since he does not have an available mount listed}.
So, how have you all selected Elmo's proficient weapons and/or added any weapon specialization?
1) Use his final two proficiency slots for longbow.
2) Proficient in a type of crossbow or else short bow, with also proficiency in one sword type: short, broad, long, or bastard?
3) Proficient in a type of crossbow or else short bow, and a single weapon specialization in either a type of crossbow or else battleaxe? {Elmo cannot have specialization in short bow with also proficiencies in battleaxe and dagger, due to UA states bow specialization takes two slots for bows other than crossbows}.
How have you all made determinations for Elmo? I am leaning towards he is also proficient in light crossbow and either long or broad sword, assuming that he gained these proficiencies from his father, the retired fighter and captain of the Hommlet militia company? Therefore, Elmo would not have a UA weapon specialization?
