I bought this on my Kindle this morning and started reading it. It's by the same author that wrote THE DEEP. The set up is good: a boy scout troop on an island with one adult scoutmaster, isolated from civilization except for one radio... then a mysterious stranger shows up and things get weird.

I really like the writing in the Deep. Maybe I'll pick this up next. I'm reading Maestro right now, one of the newer Dtiz'zt books.

I'm not quite finished yet, but I recommend it and it is better than THE DEEP because it is more plausible.

I don't want to say too much because of spoilers, but I thought this worked well on a number of levels, horror-wise. As far as influences go, I kept thinking of Stephen King's stories: CARRIE, THE STAND, "The Body," and DREAMCATCHER, and William Golding's LORD OF THE FLIES. They are the obvious ones. I have to give this author credit for being so readable... Both books of his were real page-turners.
It looks like the settings of Falstaff Island (3 miles off the coast of Prince Edward Island in Canada), and Northpoint (the town on Prince Edward Island where the characters are from) are fictional. But I thought it was interesting that there really is a Falstaff Island in Canada, far away in NW Hudson Bay, and there really is a Northpoint Lighthouse on PEI, just no town there. There are some actual locations on PEI named in the book as well, like Tignish, Charlottetown, Montague, etc. I like when authors do this, and mix the fictional with the real, like H.P. Lovecraft's "Lovecraft Country" and Stephen King's fictional locations like Castle Rock and Derry. It works well in horror to have it strongly anchored in reality.
