This map is a copy of the 1971 Great Kingdom Map given to Dave Megarry by Dave Arneson at some point in the mid-70s. Megarry recently uncovered it in his files. A previous version of the same map was shown in a video by Jon Peterson a few years ago. This post has my compiled notes comparing this map to the published WoG Folio setting, and the setting details mentioned in Quag Keep: Megarry's Copy of the Great Kingdom Map

I've seen that making the rounds recently. Thanks for posting it here.

I love this stuff. It would be fun to use these names for provinces within countries or as the names of historical precursors to the current WOG states. A better way to add some more detail and depth to the setting than trying to sift non-lame content out of the post-Gary garbage.

(I snuck in with a headlamp and reconnected with an extension. Amazingly the post was saved:
Priorly, I've made the association of Furyondy being associated with someone on the list called Sam Ferris (Esq.). That seems to fit with "Faraz".
"Yerocundy" is probably Bill Hoyer
"Neron" might be related to Theron "Terry" Kuntz.
"Botulia" might be Russel Tulp
"Maritz", " Slove" and "Stabilny" have me stumped.

Faraz is one of the names associated with Kalibruhn, IIRC---King Faraz is mentioned in Rob's DVD Archive.

This map seems to be a better fit for the locations in QUAG KEEP and "Secret of the Gnome Cache."
Yerocunby (sp?) and the Holy Land of Faraaz are mentioned in QUAG KEEP.
And in Gnome Cache: "The town of Rheyton lies north of Deepwell, and further north are the forests of Nehron."
I had previously assumed Nehron was derivative of Moorcock's Nehwon. Looking at it now, it looks like Neron March/Nehron, Faraz/Faraaz and Yerocundy/Yerocunby were merged into (the much better name of) Furyondy. In the Guide, there is mention of Furyondy's "old name" of Ferrond (which is closer to simply merging Faraz with Neron).

So I'm seeing Faraz and Neron March as historical/cultural regions within modern-day Furyondy - presumably they have different customs and different accents and look down on each other.
Yerocundy is an ancient name for the Greyhawk region, presumably its name when it was a province within the Great Kingdom.
Walworth is the true/historical name for what is now popularly known as the Shield Lands.
Catmelun is either a cultural region within modern-day Nyrond or an old name for Nyrond as a whole (like Gaul vs France).
The counties of Smolent and Celate and March Slove are historical realms that were swallowed up and displaced by the rise of Iuz and the Horned Society. Presumably the court of Furyondy is filled with landless nobles claiming descent from the rulers of these realms trying to organize invasions to liberate their rightful holdings.
Botulia is another name for the islands commonly called the Sea Barons, and Martiz is another name for the territory of the Lordship of the Isles.
The County of Hitherbody is a legendary realm, like the kingdom of Prester John. Some say it lies far to the north, others that it is far to the west.

Walworth survived into published Greyhawk with the reference of Holmer, Lord Commander of the Shield Lands, having the Earl of Walworth as one of his titles (Holmer was probably named after Holger Carlsen, the paladin in Poul Anderson's THREE HEARTS AND THREE LIONS). So, Walworth is, most likely, a location in the Shield Lands. Walworth is also the real-world county that Lake Geneva is in.
A lot of the locations on that map are numbered, which implies a key... I wonder if anyone has that key?
I'd like to reread the "Secret of the Gnome Cache" and QUAG KEEP using this map for reference.
It amazes me how this map (as well as the one published in PLAYING AT THE WORLD) is still recognizable as the World of Greyhawk, but I'm so glad EGG expanded on it and stretched it out the way he did for the published version.
