I got the guide for a present when it came out but I never read WORLD WAR Z (my wife did). I think I was disappointed because I was talking zombie hypotheticals for years in bars back in the 90's and it was my thing but I never thought it would have a revival. Who knows? I probably had some influence on the whole zombie comeback.
I think that the Romero zombie specific scenario's chances of happening are well below zero unless there was some new technology involved perhaps a medical treatment of the future to prevent death that backfires.
I always say if the world suddenly had zombies it wouldn't be so cut and dry as stab them in the head because what about freaks? There would be all kinds of variants that couldn't be predicted.

I would love to see some zombie freaks show up, to add uncertainty to the equation. Like if they found zombies that regained some intelligence, it would make you question whether 2nd season Hershel was crazy after all. Or what about regenerating zombies? There has to be some explanation for how zombies can function without organs, circulatory system, etc. Dead limbs mean no mobility and rigor mortis in a short amount of time... Unless you just want to handwave it all away as "It's supernatural" the explanation could have some possibilities in the show, including zombie variations.

There were a few zombie games that had variants like fat zombies that explode and spitting zombies that seemed to be a recurring trend. I played DEAD ISLAND (PS3), LEFT 4 DEAD (PC), DEAD NATION (PS3), PLANTS VS ZOMBIES (app), WALKING DEAD (PS3) and RED DEAD REDEMPTION add-on UNDEAD NIGHTMARE (PS3) and the Walking Dead game was the only one without variants.
"Zombies" straight out of Romero don't run and many of these had runners.
I still like the 1950's comic book "zombie" as some sort of green faced sentient goon from another world (Hell or whatever sci-fi explanation). Those are my favorites although the Romero traditional slow "ghoul" (like in WALKING DEAD) is hard to beat.
