I had this contractor over from BJs to give me an estimate on a door and it was like I was buying into a timeshare. This guy was really way too friendly the time is passing and every hint to wrap up is ignored. After 4 hours (6 to 10pm), then it hits. He can only estimate one price tonight otherwise its 2500 dollars more. Plus I'm going to need a background credit check so they can do all the work up front. When we questioned Mr Friendly (needing other contractor estimates, effect on credit scores, etc) you should have seen this guy's face. I think we drained 8 levels off him.

I am sometimes tempted to learn how to do everything myself and move to a cabin in Alaska just so I can avoid contractors.

When I moved in here thats what i thought. I soon learned that my style is leaning too much towards "Castle Greyhawk" and not enough "we're gonna sell this place at one point". "WHY IS THE OFFICE PAINTED MAUVE...?"

Yes, it is much better to learn how to do the work yourself. It took a while, but with some friends coaching me how to do some stuff, I finished our walkout basement 1475 sq ft! Plenty of room for gaming and brewing beer with huge rec room, full bathroom, media room, bar, wet bar, bedroom. And this year I became a grandpa, so my daughter and grandson have taken over the basement bedroom!
