Sad to hear it.
I just watched the Rankin Bass RETURN OF THE KING again recently, like within the past month, and was thinking it is still the best adaptation. Parts of it were silly, but I'll take singing orcs over Legolas running up the sides of oliphaunts any day of the week.
Has Peter Jackson's Legolas been invited to join the Avengers yet? If not, why not???

Since music is such a huge part of Tolkien's fictional world, I always wonder what Tolkien 'heard' when he imagined it -- ranging from the silly songs all the way up to the Music of the Ainur. He may or may not have approved of the music in the Rankin Bass adaptations (who can say?), but interweaving story telling with singing is firmly a part of the Tolkien tradition.

There are some records of Tolkien singing that various people have played for me over the years. I could never afford such collectibles! I'm not sure if I ever heard the orc songs which are the most memorable from the Rankin Bass: "Down to Goblin Town" and "15 Birds".
