I've come close to reading a Driz'zt book many times, but always opted for something else. I finally took the plunge. I started reading Homeland. The writing really isn't that good, but it's a decent story. Which is kind of the same way I feel about most of the Gord material, but Greyhawk is far more appealing as a setting. The drow city is interesting though.

I read The Crystal Shard when it came out - the first Drizzt book, where he's one of four main characters (alongside a human barbarian, halfling, and dwarf). I remember thinking it was okay when I was 13; similarly to the first Dragonlance book, it seemed like the author was mostly describing characters and scenes from his games (Gygax's Gord books didn't feel the same way). I also read the second book in that series (Streams of Silver) and remember nothing at all about it beyond its title. The third one (The Halfling's Gem) I either bought and never read or started reading but gave up on midway through because I was bored - that it came out in 1990, right when I was giving up on TSR and AD&D generally, was surely a factor in that decision. I was never even tempted to read any of Salvatore's later books (of which there are, apparently, more than 50!) so I can't speak to them one way or the other.

I can't even recall which of those that I had read CRYSTAL SHARD, DARKWALKER ON MOONSHAE, then something with a dinosaur humanoid and an anthology of FR tales.
I recall reading DARKWALKER ON MOONSHAE (1987) as kind of a celtic themed story without much D&D some kind of shapeshifter and a prophesy. Then when I came back from Florida everyone talking about how official drow act according to THE CRYSTAL SHARD (1988). I had no idea that Gary Gygax being gone made it official nothing. So I went into it with that in mind that it was going to have some insight. Instead it just read like D&D porn that is catering to what you would expect but no surprises. My friend Taylor thought it was alright but later reneged after I told him that I'd like some of the drugs that he was taking when he read it.
