Has anybody detailed what's under the city? A maze of sewers, evil temples, etc? Any adventures taken place there? I think I've heard conflicting rumors about a passage to the Castle Dungeons being found there somewhere.

From CITY OF HAWKS Chapter 11 and Chapter 12:
END OF CHAPTER 11:
BEGINNING OF CHAPTER 12:
Of course, everything with Gary was always... something else. Just mark off each mentioned area as another level at least. The Workhouse is the original "Citadel" of before Zagyg's era and the old city also coincides with what he played with in the Greyhawk campaign. So that and the "new" Zagyg era Citadel of "New Town" both have interconnecting "military complexes" (READ: dungeon) which also connected with the "citadel of Zagyg" (READ: Castle Greyhawk). So it seems:
SEWER AREA/LEVEL DRAINAGE AREA/LEVEL CISTERN/RESERVOIR AREA/LEVEL AQUEDUCT/TO OUTSIDE DUCTS AREA/LEVEL OLD RESERVOIR/CANAL AREA/LEVEL MILITARY COMPLEX/DUNGEON AREA/LEVEL
I had assumed the radiating tunnels go to the New Citadel and Castle Greyhawk.

Wow, Gene is like some kind of instant literary sourcebot. Or maybe a new monster -- "Gygaxian Lore Djinni." There's even more info about Greyhawk's sewers and underground works in CITY OF HAWKS... I remember some scenes with the villain, Colvetis Pol, that reference "the labyrinthine system of ducts beneath the city." Didn't Rob Kuntz also do up a Greyhawk sewers map? www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=42127#p879861

I forgot CHAPTER 13 has the actual descent: I've seen that before and it seems to match the pattern of the "Old city" (READ: Greyhawk City Campaign map)so I'd imagine that that could have been the basis of the offical product except having a tunnel that leads to the Citadel in "New Town" (and about the "new" areas; Garden Quarter etc.) and a tunnel leading North to Castle Greyhawk.

I remember that being one of my favorite parts of the Gord books, undoubtedly because it feels just like a D&D dungeon-crawl. I just skimmed over it above, and it looks like there's enough detail to draw at least a loose sketch-map of that section of the sewers (and other undercity levels) from it.

The Gord books may fall short by the classic era (pre-70's) standards but compared to its non-TSR contemporary peers (Xanth, Thieves World, Pern, Thomas Covenant, Shannara, Conan pastiche and the various cookie cutter standard comedy fantasies) its like they were paper gold. I think they had started in a mundane tone towards a build up that was compromised in GORD THE ROGUE.

The Gord books definitely get bonus points because of the Greyhawk content. The fact that Gary was not an experienced fiction writer is painfully obvious in some of the early parts. And the turmoil with TSR and "Greyhawk" makes it's way into the later works. For writing quality, Gary's DJ stories are much better quality.

Yeah, I think that even GREYHAWK ADVENTURES:SOOC (1985) and GA:AOE (1986) are flawed in an UNEARTHED ARCANA (1985) manner because of the fact that TSR was imploding at the time so they were rushed to the printer without more game plug-in treatment. Technically, he was supposed to deliver something better than the 3 DRAGONLANCE books (1984 to 1985) and considering that DL's follwup "twin" trilogy came out between (February 1986 and August 1986) there was definitely a rush to print mentality going on. That said, the whole Gygax Greyhawk yarn writing had to be taken with a grain of salt. It still has to be the story highlight of the 1980's as sad as that is. A lot of people that I knew were reading the tail end of the 70's stuff repackaged (Elric, etc.).

Well I meant the tail end of the Sword and Sorcery era that pretty much ended in the 70's that was repackaged for the 80's (Lankhmar, Conan, etc.)

Rob ran an adventure set in the Sewers at NTX in 2012 (and perhaps GaryCon too that year?), and it was fun. I'll see if I can dig up my player maps from it. Allan.

I recall seeing that in the pile of maps that were "Greyhawk" at the 2002 GenCon. I swear I think that I saw everything at 2002 GenCon (Ernie's the Dungeon Hobby Shop map, and Rob's Tsojcanth and the Bottle City, etc).
Even if I went back in time I couldn't alter GenCon 2002 at one point I felt like I was being forced by the universe. Of course, one of my then current off the street players happened to be there at the same time and that was probably the most surreal aspect because he couldn't relate to the extreme D&D-A-rama that I was handed.

I wrote a 3 page "trailing map" that was just words/descriptions of our encounters in the GH sewers, and found that the other night. I'll scan them later this week. Allan.

As it turns out, I think it was 2013 not 2012, but my trailing maps isn't dated (which is odd, for me), and I didn't find my PC notes, so I assume I've got at least one more page hiding in my office. Anyway, what I have is here: www.greyhawkonline.com/grodog/gh_sewers_rjk-trailing_map-grodog-ntx-2013.pdfWhen I find the rest, I'll update the PDF and let you know. Allan.

Have you ever compared your notes to the map linked upthread to see where on that map your adventure occurred?
