Well, I got a birthday gift of SHADOW OF MORDOR for the PC. Well, its pretty tasty so far. Hard and confusing but its I believe taking place in the future of the LORD OF THE RINGS' films in the Fourth Age starting off at a refurbished Black Gate as a ranger outpost with uruks coming back from somewhere and overthrowing it. You as the main character die and come back as the "Shadow of Mordor" trying to fight back with the help of an elf spirit who is trapped in the shadow with you but for some reason you can come back to life.

I've seen previews. The game play looks good. 4th age was the impression I got too.

I saw the trailer. It looks like you are playing some kind of undead ranger out for revenge... it's not very clear. I'm trying to avoid reading too much about it online, in case I decide to play it.

Heh, without any SPOILERS I'll say its a sneaky game where direct conflict is a mistake as I've found out that. And replaying is punished, the captains go up in level if you are defeated and come back to life.

Alright, this game is not the Fourth Age its between LOTR and THE HOBBIT. Some elements just popped up and confirmed when this is taking place.

My son has been on me to get this so "we" can play. Is it worth the $60?

It reminds me of ARKHAM CITY (2011) where you sneak around a section of Gotham with nightvision.
As far as Tolkien content it seems like its derivative.

Like for instance there are all kinds of herbs for health and they mentioned some unknown Olog Hai (Olog something).

There is a pinch of RED DEAD REDEMPTION (2011) (riding around) and CIVILIZATION (1991) (orc captain vs orc captain battles offscreen)

There are also onscreen captain vs captain situations that you get involved in as well.
I just moved to another area in Mordor which was surprising because I didn't think there was going to be a whole other area.
Gollum looks movie-ish but Sauron has a different look and Galadriel looks slightly different.
There hasn't been a single mention of hobbits, wizards, or balrogs yet.

I finished the story mode about 3 days ago. It kept me interested but ultimately its like any modern adventure console game.
They eventually mentioned the two lost Istari briefly although not present and Saruman has some distant angle but not present at all.
I ran into a randomly named orc with a crude kenning "Halflinglover" but ultimately no sense of hobbitry that games of yore used to have. You get the sense that hobbits have now achieved Bombadil's status as too "ghey" for sure in this version of Middle Earth.
I don't want to spoil any of the actual game but this could easily have been an original fantasy about orcs. There seemed to be a hint at a sequel.

What did they say about the two lost Istari?

<<<SPOILERS>>>
There are items to find and one was a broken staff and the other was a crude carved representation of the two wizards in blue stone. When you find the objects they have "memories" that you can hear because you're a ghost. And they're anectdotes about meeting the wizards but very vague just mentioning them coming and going mysteriously.

More on this. It seems the game has a top shelf generator of superficial orc names, voices, behaviors and looks from random piecemeal elements in addition to the game elements of having random different interactive properties.
Just thought I'd mention that because its probably the most notable thing.
