The party spent the next few days resting and planning. Nobody in town was able to identify the wand they found. Tharendell’s master informed them that they would probably have to travel to the city of Greyhawk to find a wizard capable of identifying it. There was some debating about whether they should go back to the monastery, where they suspected there may be more there to discover, or travel to Greyhawk to find a wizard to identify the wand. Eventually they decided to travel to Greyhawk. They spent a day equipping and then headed for the city. The party avoided a few minor encounters on the way, and several days later arrived at Greyhawk. After some inquiries they ended up at the Green Dragon Inn. There they learned a few rumors about the ruins of Greyhawk Castle, a mansion in the woods that the wizard Zagig supposedly lived in prior to moving into the castle, and, regards to their immediate concern, they learned of Klinshock, the Striped Mage, who could probably identify their wand. The next morning they headed to the Tower of the Striped Mage. They found it with no problem. At the door they were greeted by a man who told them to go away, beggars weren’t welcome. The party managed to refrain from getting into it with the man, and eventually, with the help of a nice bribe, convinced him to summon Klinshock. The Striped Mage, in all his gaudy flourish arrived soon afterwards. The party explained what they needed, and the mage gave them a price and told them to come back the next day. They agreed, polled their money, and left. The next day, the ritual with the apprentice was repeated, and eventually the wizard told them it was a wand of paralyzation with 26 charges. They thanked him, gave the wand to Tharendell, and headed back to the inn.

Was this the same Oak Haven that we came from?
Any chance of you updating our Campaign Journal?

Yes and no on the village. The village concept/layout is the same, but the placement is just for convience since there really was no extended campaigning planned. My cousin just wanted to get in some face to face gaming with some of the old regulars before he moves to Florida in a few weeks. I have more free time than I've had in a while since school is out and baseball/teeball/soccer/soccer has ended, so I should be able to start detailing your campaign activity again.

Dark Chateau spoilers ahead!
Back at the inn another debate on what to do next ensued: go back and finish exploring the monastery, explore Zagig’s old mansion, or explore the ruins of Greyhawk Castle. The party decided to explore Zagig’s mansion. They never did come to an agreement, but the mansion was set as the destination. The next morning they started off for the mansion. When they reached the little cart track that led to the manse, there was another brief attempt to convince the party to head to Greyhawk Castle instead, but they stuck by the plan and headed to the chateau. After trekking along for two miles or so, they crested a hill and found themselves looking down into a small open vale. In addition to the manse, the party could see a garden, pond, several outbuildings, and a well. The party decided to go directly to the mansion. As they approached, they started taking arrow fire from a stable off to their right. A moment later a half dozen goblins raced from around the side and charged. The PCs met the goblins’ charge and melee commenced, PCs on horseback continued to take arrow fire. After it became apparent that their was some sort of poison on the arrows that caused extra damage, the mounted PCs quickly dismounted. Soon afterwards, three large orcs came from the other side of the stables and joined the fray. The humanoids proved tougher than expected, but eventually the PCs killed them all. Other than the fine scimitar that the leader was wielding, the humanoids didn’t have any loot. The hike to the mansion took most of the day, and beat up as they now were, the PCs decided to make camp. The party lucked out and made it through the night without encounter.

The next morning the party was ready to give it another go. The mounted characters put there mounts in the stable and the party headed towards a side door they had spotted. The side door opened into a kitchen. Upon entering, the party was attacked by a swarm of giant rats. Several minor bites later, the rodents of unusual size were dead. A search of the kitchen revealed heaps of broken dishes and glasses as well as forks, spoons, knives, etc. One exceptional item was located, a large, exquisitely crafted cleaver. Milrick took the cleaver and the party headed through an archway deeper into the interior of the mansion.

A quick look around revealed that the main living area was straight ahead, but a short hallway to the left and a door looked inviting. The door opened into a library, or what used to be a library. Note: a LOT of time was spent in the library. I will just give an abridged account. Most of the books had been removed, but a few were still there, including an open one on a table. Some scrolls/parchment sheets were also lying about. After a few minutes of poking around, the book on the table floated into the air and up to Draxalthor and hovered there. Drax started reading the text to himself. After a few seconds the book shook, giving an impression of impatience. The paladin started reading again, aloud. The book was called “The Old Man in the Moon”. A few moments later, indentations on a reading chair and footrest appeared, as if somebody had sat down. Once he started reading, Drax didn’t want to stop until he had finished the book. It took almost two hours, but the party guessed that if anything were to happen, it wouldn’t happen unless the reading was finished. And they were correct. After finishing the book, a scroll fell out of midair. The scroll mentioned how to find a secret door in the basement that accessed the watery caverns. The party bid their ghostly host a farewell and headed to the steps down they had discovered in the kitchen.
