The party returned to the medusa lair to find Thordak right where they left him. Silverkill read the scroll and after a successful system shock check Thordak was back. The party believed that the black pudding first encountered several sessions ago must be guarding some treasure, so they headed that with with their packs full of oil. They followed some passages that lead to a door on the opposite side of the room, and after a couple failed open doors checks, busted in with flasks in hand. Gavin/Krosmoor got the Schwarzenegger award for the line, "We're pudding you down!" It took all of the oil they bought, but they finally killed the blob. Jastra's plate mail was heavily damaged after the fight, and so was Jastra for that matter. What made it worse was the party found no treasure for their efforts. Continuing their explorations the Party searched a few empty rooms before coming upon a caecilla worm, like a Moldvay version of a purple worm, but it's gray. The party handled it pretty easily. The fight with the worm was close to the lair of a pair on minotaurs, and they were waiting for the party. The minotaurs surprised the party and were dishing out a lot of damage, but the party managed to defeat them. On the body of a recent victim the party found a ouch containing four gems totaling 1,700 GP. At this point the party was out of cures and low on hit points, so they headed back to the Underground City. Silverkill had reached 3rd level.

2/24/2018 Session After resting up, the party was ready to head back to the lower tiers. There was only one more door on the 6th Tier, and it ended up being a deserted barracks. After exploring it, there was a lengthy debate on whether the party should go back to the room with the wraiths, or head down to the next level. They're thinking is, 'two wraiths must be guarding good treasure', but the fear of further level loss won the day, and so they headed down to the 7th Tier. Climbing down the ladder to the 7th Tier, the party was attacked by Hell Hounds. The hell hounds were slain, but not before ruining Corbek's magic plate mail. The party returned to the Brotherhood of Gorm base on the upper levels to get his old armor, and returned to the dungeons. Encounters included displacer beasts, mummies, trolls, giant weasels, and werebears. The werebears were the first creatures whose minds they read with the helm of telepathy they weren't planning on attacking, but the party members still had to talk themselves out of attacking them. Two party members got diseased by the mummies, but they were quickly healed by Corbek. For their troubles they got quite a lot of monetary loot, a M-U scroll: web, dispel magic, a dragon slayer sword and a wand of trap detection. The party is now: Thordak: 5th level human fighter Plāsolder: 4th level human fighter Corbek: 5th level human cleric Jastra: 4/3 elf fighter/magic-user Krosmoor: 4th level human magic-user Silverkill: 4th level human magic-user Krosmoor is a session away from 5th level.

3/10/2018 Session Notes We had a new player join the group last night. Greg. He rolled up a paladin named Selkie. Selkie was part of a party sponsored by a noble house of Nyrond who entered the Bright Desert looking for magical artifacts. After fighting off waves of attacks by desert nomads, the party’s camp was overrun in a nighttime attack by hobgoblin raiders working for the priests of Zargon. Selkie was knocked unconscious and taken as a prisoner by the hobgoblins. After returning to the Lost City the hobgoblin’s were ambushed by a patrol from the Brotherhood of Gorm. The hobgoblins were wiped out and the Brothers took the paladin back to their stronghold. The Brothers introduced the new Outlander to the party, and they decided to recruit him.
The party returned to the dungeon. After verifying they had explored every part of the 7th Tier that they could find, they descended to the 8th Tier. After mapping some passages they entered a chamber, It was dust covered and cobweb strewn, but not looted like most of the other areas they’ve explored. Suddenly a ghostly figure materialized in the middle of the room. The party guessed wraith and Corbek tried to turn. “17”, Mike Said smugly. “It ignores you and attacks”, I replied, and the spectre attacked. After several pathetic rolls the spectre was dead. A chest in the room had the party excited, but Krosmoor’s wand indicated it was trapped. From outside the room he cast a knock spell on it. The lid cracked open, and a bluish-gray gas started billowing out. The party ran the other way. Plāsolder failed his open doors roll at the next door they came to, so when Corbek pushed it open on the next try the to hill giants inside were waiting for him. With surprise they attacked, one landing a solid shot. The party killed the giants and looted their lair. A scroll found was cursed, and Plāsolder was shrunk down to 1” tall after trying to read it. Unable to do anything about it at the time, the party returned to the Underground City, stopping at the spectre room on the way, finding the chest filled with gold. To be continued.

After they found the cursed scroll, Eric said he was going to read it. Mike said it would be better to wait til they returned to base just Incase it was cursed, and then Eric read it anyways.

Once back in the Underground City Corbek cast a remove curse spell on Plāsolder and restored him to his normal size. The next day the party continued exploring the 8th Tier. They encountered a manticore and an eight headed hydra. They were ambushed by a giant constrictor snake while traveling back to the Underground City, but it was of little consequence. Their treasure haul for the evening was: 4,000 CP, 12,000 SP, 29,897 in GP and jewelry, a potion of healing, a Hemet of comprehending languages & reading languages, and a long sword +2. The party had to leave all of the copper and about 10,000 of the silver behind. Corbek got the potion, Plāsolder got the helmet, and Selkie got the sword. Corbek made it to 6th level, Krosmoor and Plāsolder made it to 5th level, Jastra reached 4th in M-U, and Selkie made it to 2nd level.

When a party finally gets a magic-user who can cast 3rd level spells that a pretty big moment. It’s like reaching the boundary to the next phase of the game. One encounter he’s doing 2d4+2 total, the next he’s doing 5d6 in an area of effect. As a DM I now get to describe the collateral damage, I.e. the treasure that inadvertently gets fried by the new spells.

Yeah, 5th level is a big benchmark in AD&D. I've always thought of 5th-7th level as the sweet spot in adventuring.
Can Selkie turn into a seal?

Yeah, I see it starting at 5th too, but I would push it up no name level. Actually, it's been fun pushing past that. The problem is it ends up taking so much experience to level after that, and it just becomes a drag for players, but the actual play is very enjoyable.

The party met Zargon last night. After defeating the vampire on the 9th Tier they went chasing his escaping gaseous form and ran across the slide trap to Zargon's lair. The first round all three party M-Us were going to cast spells (lightning bolt and two magic missiles), but Zargon ruined all three spells with tentacle attacks. The addition of the paladin was a big factor. A number of Zargon's attacks missed by one, and only after the paladin's protection from evil aura was factored in. The party pumped heals into the paladin to keep him and his protection active. Jastra the elf came within 1 point of all dead after a bite took her to -3 HPs. But the party finally did kill the BBG. My plan was to have the priests of Zargon recover the horn, and then have the party raid their stronghold to recover it so they could take it to be destroyed, but you never know what kids playing will do. Tyler (Silverkill) decided to take the horn as a trophy, so next time it will be just the trip to the Eye of Zargon to chuck the horn in.

4/7/2018 Session Report After resting and training the party was ready to go to the Wasteland to throw Zargon’s Horn into the lava pit known as the Eye of Zargon. Simos, a friend they had made within the Brotherhood of Gorm warned them they the priests of Zargon would be looking for them, and the path would be guarded. The party emerged from their hiding place in the Underground City and made their way towards the rock bridges crossing the channel to the Wasteland. While passing through Orpheus Park the party ran into a Cynidicean dressed like a bird and flapping his arms like wings. The noise attracted more Cynidiceans and it almost turned into a mad tea party before the party managed to slip away. Passed the park the party spotted a hobgoblin patrol, and were able to avoid them. Approaching the bridged the party spotted squads of ten hobgoblins on each of them. The party picked the closest bridge and charged the hobgoblins, meeting them in the middle of the bridge. Immediately the hobgoblins from the other bridge moved to surround the party, Five of the hobgoblins were armed with man catchers and one trapped Jastra and tried dragging her over the side of the bridge. While this was going on the party spotted what looked like a cleric coming to join the battle. A 10’ diameter sphere of darkness flying above him. The cleric stopped behind the party and begin spell casting. The sphere of darkness descended on the party. The enemy cleric cast a hold person spell and Plasolder and Thordak were both held. Corbek made his save and countered with a hold of his own. The enemy cleric failed his save and was held. The party managed to sleep, kill, etc. all the hobgoblins. The darkness was dropped revealing a Vrock demon. The paladin’s aura kept the demon at bay. The Vrock used telekinesis to life Silverkill out of the protection radius and attacked. After a round of attacks, dropping him to the ground and leaving him with 2 HPs. The party tried numerous spells, but the demon’s magic resistance spoiled them all. The party ended up dragging it to the ground with Jastra’s magic rope and killing it in melee. After healing the party continued to the Eye of Zargon. As they approached the noticed several beings that appeared to be cavorting around the lava pit: two salamanders and an efreeti. Upon spotting the party the monsters advanced. The efreeti commanding them to stop while the salamanders continued to advance. The party ignored him. The efreeti cast enlarge on itself and grew to 36’ in height. Again the paladin’s aura kept them at bay. The efreeeti created a wall of fire between the party and the lava pool and the monsters did their best to attack with ranged attacks. The party decided to push to the Eye of Zargon, taking heavy damage as they advanced, but finally making it to the edge of the lava pit. Plasolder threw the horn into the lava. A burst of energy rippled out from the horn, knocking the party down, and dispelling the fire creatures like blowing out candles, leaving only wisps of smoke. With everyone near zero hit points they healed again and made the trip back to base, which is where we called it for the night.

Having a paladin saved the party. They made some bad tactical choices, and without the paladin’s aura keeping the vrock out it might have ended badly. Some of the hobgoblins has man catchers and they gave the party a tough time too.
