Well, my players will officially make their first foray into the CZ environs tomorrow. I'm gonna try and steer them into the "Mouths of Madness", but I know they'll be itchin' to enter the tower/walls/castle area! So far; a Cleric (my NPC--2nd level), a M-U, a Thief, and a Barbarian are for sure... a Druid and possibly one other may be joining as well. These are the same characters who did Dark Chateau, but after that we went on a brief hiatus (due to multiple family obligations and the exorbitant price of gas--some of these guys live 50 miles away!)

And steer them away from the lower levels! I don't know, I wa thinking about it, maybe that fog could come in handy to deter going down too far. I was thinking maybe combining BARRIER PEAKS elements with DUNGEONLAND to throw them off...Perhaps say its a spell effect like the fog while still keeping it in the zone...

Getting them into the Mouths of Madness shouldn't be too hard. Have the bandits at the outer gate house give them a hard time, or have the NPC 'hear' that the dungeons can be accessed through the caves, bypassing the toll at the same time.

Yeppers--I don't even want them in the Courtyards yet, let alone the Storerooms. I would very much like to expose them to the Old Guard kobolds--perhaps a patrol of six on the outside--just to whet their appetites! I do hope they follow the path to the Ogre (although, not really the Losels--those would TPK them handily!) Goal is (through rumors in Yggsburgh) to entice them to explore some caves today, but these guys sometimes go off on unexpected directions... ^__^

Yeah, Scotty--I thought about those Bandits, and if needed I'll use 'em... I'm just afraid the Barbarian might try to start something the Bandits will finish! Heh!

Man, I hope they avoid the Losels, or it'll be a short game; or a very long game with rolling new PC's!

The losels are very easy to avoid, but even so, if you run it as written, and play the monsters to their potential, you should probably expect casualties.

That party seems pretty light on fighters... maybe have the NPC suggest for them to hire some men-at-arms as back ups.

Excellent, GT. Looking forward to hearing about the game (if you're inclined to post that is)!!

Heh, when I read this encounter/scenario - I thought PCs would be crazy to enter their lands or venture off the main road. But then, PCs do crazy stuff!!! ;D Honestly, I really don't know if my group would know better than getting off the trail in this area. Hope you guys have fun!!

Is there any reason to get the C&C PHB or M&T in order to run CZ at all? I.e. to see what it is you need to "convert"? Or is it pretty straight-forward? What about monsters? It doesn't seem like overall there would be monsters that were never published in OD&D/OAD&D, but who knows?

BTW, TLG emailed me saying they received my payment but that the product (Upper Works) was on "backorder"... *dread*

It doesn't seem like overall there would be monsters that were never published in OD&D/OAD&D, but who knows? I shouldn't think you need them. The monster stats are included in the product, and I don't recall very many monsters that are new. GT?

BTW, TLG emailed me saying they received my payment but that the product (Upper Works) was on "backorder"... *dread* I think there was an issue with the box company - a small firm where the owner got sick and there was a slight delay of sorts. Steve did mention on his recent blog that the boxes are ready. So I imagine that they will begin mailing them next week.

I finally got a response from them on ordering CZ just a couple of weeks back, but I figured I'd wait until January rather than risk it at this time of year, where everything can be insane. Plus, I won't have the cash until then either. ;D

I think they legally can't sell them anymore after the end of the year, friend...

Yeah, that sucks but at least I'll know the players won't be able to buy a copy cheap.... Seriously, superficially, it didn't go over well when they passed it around the table at the last game. Images can really set the tone for game stuff and it has a look about it that seems like something they saw before. Nobody poked fun at it or anything like that but there was no "hell yeahs!" involved either. Personally, as you all know, my enthusiasm is stifled by the lack of continuance and maybe they picked up on my dwelling on Gygax games going south with the property...who knows? I hope that I don't destroy it in a fit of rage when they announce its going to Steve Jackson....

Gene, you need to hook up with me again in person, and I can gush over the "coolness" of it all (however subtle it may be at these lower levels)! It's a shame that Gary didn't want to put another dungeon level or two in, as things seem to develop exponentially from the Upper Works down! ^__^ Scott--Eric seems to be spouting psychobabble over on Rob's boards... Comments?
