Well, they are on the 6th level! Thats probably the only solid GH castle detail that I've ever heard Gary tell me.
IN D&D, they were listed as being "2nd level monsters".

Re: Thouls
You will not be disappointed.
Remember, the Mouths of Madness is but one component of a much larger whole: 3 boxed sets, each with about 5 modules contained.

Yes, I know they're in there. I was looking for them on the wilderness random encounter charts.

Yeah, I know you know that I know that you know that I know that.... Would they be out and about if they were that far in?

Nah, they ain't running through the Little Hillwood forest, if that's what you were looking for. But watch out for the losels!

Is one at a "lossel" when one runs into those green tree-climbers?? Not if you're a panther, it seems... ^__^

You might be off your gourd on that one, but who am I to say! :-)

I finally looked it up, and Peter, along with Davis, did the layout for Dark Chateau. I remember reading some negative feedback on the layout. It appears they took the complaints seriously and went with a more functional approach with this.

I don't think Dark Chateau layout looks bad, but I do prefer the layout of Mouths of Madness , due to the boxed text. In DC, it is shaded gray and the text is italicized. In MoM, there is no gray shade, and the text is not italicized. That being said, I understand some folks avoid read-aloud text like the plague. Personally, I have experienced modules where I find it to enhance the mood, other instances in which I find the language to be a detractor. To each his own, I suppose.

My problem with Dark Chateau is actually with the maps. I hated the maps.

I've been buying TLG stuff for a long time. I worked with the Gygaxes on the Lost City of Gaxmoor, and have been checking out their stuff ever since. Mouths of Madness is probably their best release to date, IMO.

Thanks, Scott. That means a lot to this struggling writer. Being self-critical, I see a lot of room for improvement, but the thus far positive reception is encouraging for me. Gary has been an inspiring mentor, and I can't thank him enough for the opportunities he and the Trolls have afforded me.
Regards, --Jeff T.

Well, I was referring to the editing, layout, and maps, but the adventure is cool too.

So Jeff, I know Gary's feeding you the seeds for a lot of this material. What encounters are yours completely? When I worked on Gaxmoor and the Slayer's Guide, it was mostly just fleshing out ideas Ernie and Gary were giving me, but when I started on the Teeth of Barkash Nour, Gary gave me some leeway for my own ideas.

I can't say any encounter is mine completely. It is a true collaboration. Anything I write (seeds supplied or not) is tinkered with, revised, trashed, or rewritten by Gary, so I suppose he is a lot more hands-on with this project than the ones you cite. Certainly I have presented a good many ideas and encounters that Gary has accepted as part of the greater whole, but I don't feel it's appropriate for me to say "this one was mine," per se.

Perhaps you could point to two extreme examples for us, Jeff?---one where you provided the original idea, and that remained mostly intact with some input from Gary, and one where Gary provided the original idea and you made some modifications/additions? Or am I painting you into a corner too much?

Or am I painting you into a corner too much? Your last sentence pretty much pegged it, Allan. I'm not comfortable answering that question. Maybe over a beer some day long after the books are all released I'd be more open to discussing some of the finer points.
