Anyways, lets steer the bashing back on topic, the EttRoG book.

In general, it seems as if nothing has changed in the D&D line from the 90's with the same "big story/no adventure" tone permeating everything this hardcover being no exception. This "edition" specifically is not unlike the staleness of the old "comical castle" and "serious ruins" book with a pinch of the Moore type Gazetteer style then add 3e type creatures and NPCs seemingly generated from Magic The Gathering card stacking.
From where I stand, GH is still in a bad state and will continue to be delivered in this state unless people at the toy company start scrutinizing that this isn't right. A giant investigation needs to be done into repairing the game's lost integrity. I would even take a PHARAOH/RAVENLOFT/DRAGONLANCE 3d map anyday over what they've been serving up (tons of speckly maps of few keys not unlike the Williams era). They need to sit down, stop and say perhaps whats been put out for 20 years isn't D&D at all. Once they get to this point, which I believe can happen, then perhaps things will be made in a fashion suitable for all the rpg players that made AD&D such a whopping success. Especially in the days of retro-cool items popping onto the shelves left and right. Until that time, I can't put my dollars towards anything but something hailed as a "real deal" or a "second coming".

Gene, there is no hope for published "Greyhawk", and that's why I referred to it as a dead setting. There'd been too much damage done to the setting. Good material disguised an generic material is the best I expect you'll see.

Well, it has to be reiterated at least to make them wake up some day...

As long as the IP is owned by a larg corp. and not an individual or small co. that some day will never come.

They should sell Greyhawk to Gary for $1. In a perfect world, of course.

I can still see a small company being overwhelmed by a "WALL OF APPLE POLISHERS". So it isn't just the "Omega corporation factor", its also the established fanbase of "Corrupthawk" to deal with. To deal with this I would funnel them into a teeny bopper Greyhawk called "G-Whiz" to celebrate whatever they find so fascinating about continuance and "canon". From there I would have a Sutherland-like softcore pornographic cover for Original Greyhawk and continue the line as it should have been: for college students and adults in general. Have an adventure series that explores different areas but indirectly. That is, just giving a taste of "setting" through the encounters and no story or history. Just new cults, new gods, new monsters, etc. and no extrapolation from a sentence in a "Greyhawk's World" article. Thats what I believe is what everyone wants to see. Well...at least, me and... ...this guy I know. Alright, maybe its just me so what?!? I can still have my "what if Greyhawk was mine to control" fantasy can't I? You can't take that away from me can ya?
