Yes, level plays a major factor to me with all the costs. Although my "patron" technique is an in-game barnacled behavior that in the end is just convenient. I also giveaway items and it throws people off initially that is until they grasp the methodology which is a "you know there is no way that you're not going to pay for this in the end" kinda thing. I remember Bill's King character giving back a really powerful borrowed artifact weapon to the Emperor. It was classic: " I say to him...
Uh...
I take...
No wait...
Er..
I hand it over promptly with blade facing towards me."

As for paying for the henchmen training thats always been their responsibility but a deal is a deal no matter who the character is, right? Technically, a henchman could ask for training ahead of time as part of a deal. I don't remember ever having a henchman ask for it though. But would that come out of their cut of the take as well?

Heres another good question. Has anyone ever had players have their PCs act as henchmen? I've had player's use a bunch of characters but it was assumed that the lower level characters must act indifferent to the higher level ones to make it seem fair.

I guess that would depend on the deal. Also, you might be able to save some money by having party members train the henchmen, for a reduced cost.

Party's seem to stick together when its the player's demesne. So I can see people doing that readily for "the cause".* * Which the way I look at is a pitfall for a DM to add to or encourage that behavior. When I play as a player I get prickly around the "party mentality" and I try to undermine any favoritism for actual players over non-players as it kills my mood when people do that.

For me it depends on the alignment; "party mentality" is perfectly in-character for a lawful bunch.

Whats the chances of an all lawful party? -25% chance? I have never had in all these years a solid bunch of lawfuls. Although, I had an entire party of chaotics once around 1987.

What I meant by "party mentality" is someone healing an obvious villainous player.

and not doing the same for an evil NPC associate.

I'd say that in the past 10 years, most of the characters I've DMed for have been lawful.
