Here's some info EGG provided regarding space required" In two places he mentions specific methods of attack, swords used for thrusting. Would you say limiting the attack options available would incur a penalty to hit? In an adventure, Gary mentions a penalty for certain weapons due to limited space, but it seemed more ad hock than formalized. This above is interesting also regarding party size/racial/class make-up for a typical early D&D adventuring party: 17 party members! 4 small Demi-humans: dwarves, gnomes, hobbits 3 elves 10 humans 14 fighting men types 2 magic-users 1 cleric 0 thieves? How does the above compare to experience in campaigns you all have ran/participated in? 80%+ of party as fighting men types? A solitary cleric and a couple of magic-users with no thieves? Majority of the party are humans? How often have you been involved with adventuring parties of this size?

My rules of thumb for this stuff is that medium-sized figures (& dwarfs, who are short but broad) require 3' of frontage space, while small ones (gnomes, halflings, goblins, kobolds) require 2' of space, and large ones (half-ogres, gnolls, bugbears) require 4'(or more, for trolls (5'), giants (6'+), etc.). Weapon space required is total, not per-side, and overlaps with the space occupied by the wielder (so a weapon that requires 1-2' to use is subsumed into the space occupied by the wielder). Weapons 5' or more in length can be used from the second rank (subtract 4' to determine their effective length when so doing) but require open space in the first rank. So, for example, in a 10' wide hallway you could fit up to 5 small individuals so long as all of them are using a weapon that require no more than 2' to use (hand axes, short swords, etc.). Or, if you had 4, then 2 individuals in the second rank could also fight with spears or stabbing pole arms. If three medium-sized individuals are abreast in a 10' wide hallway, all using weapons that require 3' or less of space, then 1 individual can fight from the second rank. Two dwarfs with battle axes (i.e. taking up 4' each) could be backed up by 2 second-rank spearmen, etc.
If you don't have sufficient space for your weapon, it can't be used. If someone with a footman's flail and someone with a two-handed sword are standing side by side in a 10' wide corridor, only one of them can attack in any given round (presumably the flail, since it has a faster weapon speed).
