Scott----ok, over at DF I became confused again as to initiative and spellcasting, and trying to factor in when segments are used etc.
Anyway, I have come to the conclusion that the following is how combat proceeds: (please let me know what you think)
1. before init. rolled spellcasters determine what spell they INTEND to cast (they have not begun to cast yet)!
2. Surprise is rolled! If surprise, attack as normal with weapons (triple missiles if foll. the book) or spells within the segments allowed of surprise compared to casting segment time.
3. Roll initiaive: winning side attacks with missiles (for mult. missiles the first attack occurs) , hand held, weapons, SPELLS, or magical devices.
Now----if the winning side has a spellcaster who can be reached by the opposing side's weapon users than consult the weapon speed factor formula to see if the winning caster can be disrupted!

1. I agree 2. I agree 3. Bows or other weapons that get multiple attacks routines still have to check initiative and/or speed factor vs. casting time when attacking a spell caster, or against wands, rods, or anything with a casting time listed.. The first and last attack rule only applies when engaged against other weapons. It the weapon user in your last statement starts the round within 10’ of the spell caster, than you determine if the spell or attack comes first using the normal procedures; if the weapon user is over 10’ away he will have to charge, and the attack will occur on the segment he reaches the spell caster. Compare that to casting time. Whichever is lower occurs first. Scott
