Do you think these books allow you to increase your score over the normal racial maximums? If a human with a Dexterity of 18 read a Manual of Quickness of Action would his Dex score increase to 19? If a cleric with a Str of 18 read a Manual of Gainful Exercise, what would his Str increase to? If a fighter with a Str of 18/94 read a MoGE what would his Str increase to? After defeating Drelnza, in The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth, one of the players, a fighter with an 18/94 Str, got the Manual of Gainful Exercise. I'm not sure what the Str increase would be in this case. Any thoughts? Scott

After making this post, I thought to ask the question on EGG's game list. Gary responded rather quickly: "It moves it up one step, so I'd say he is now at 18/00.
Cheers, Gary" Scott

What if he were non-human? Humans are the only race that can have 18/00 str, right?

Since it is a magical increase, I would allow the 18/00 Str. Scott

Likewise, for non-fighter types, I would increase strength from 18 to 18/01, and from 18/01 to 18/51, etc. Despite that they can not roll those scores up at beginning, those (not 19) are the next highest scores.
I would allow racial maximums to be exceeded in this rare, magical case. Regards.

Any examples? All of the temporary items I can think of have specific rules. Scott

Any examples? All of the temporary items I can think of have specific rules. Scott Like a pale blue rhomboid ioun stone for an halfling... (+1 strenght so the halfling could have a 18) or a dwarf with a deep red sphere ioun stone... ;D It's magic, the same as the books. The same justification could go with items like gauntlet of ogre power at a lesser extent.

As long as the item didn't have a restriction listed in the description, I would allow its effect to exceed the normal racial restrictions. Scott

We have only had two cases of the ioun stones (one was a DEX to 19 and the other was a WIS to 16 or so) and never had a “Manual” yet.

Ahh ioun stones. I had one player in my group once that was his own little solar system. I gave away 3 stones assuming the party would split them up. They let one PC keep them all. All the stones, along with that fighter and henchman, are now at the bottom of the sea in the water node in the ToEE. Shortly after splashing down, they encountered a pudding. They found out the hard way that bladed weapons didn't work. Scott
