See the second chapter (as I recall) of Artifact of Evil. Yes, they are run by evil monks; you might even have to be a monk to be considered a member of the Scarlet Brotherhood proper (as opposed to their holdings and forces). Regards.

Thats right. Does anyone know if the scarlet brotherhood was ever depicted in a module (members of or even referred to)?

Cool, I'll have to dig that out. So, IYO do you think monks would need to have clerics to have a cult? Granted monks are pretty mystical fellows (or so it seemed on Kung Fu and KungFu theater) in AD&D they don't have any particular ability with the undead right?
An interesting project would be to create a Scarlet Brotherhood based module. Perhaps a temple (sim to TOEE) recently re-occupied, for 10-12th level PCs. I think the whole monk angle would be a neat twist esp. for unprepared players. I also consider a monk / cleric would be a logical primary foe, except this is not allowed for as a PC. Any ideas?

Perhaps you could do a "Return to the Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun" where the Scarlet Brotherhood had found it and made it a stronghold for their order. I know my players remember this dungeon with fondness (I certainly do), and would be willing to revisit it in a few years, if there were something going down there. Maybe the monks are seriously trying to wake Tharizdun's avatar (maybe they succeed and you have to defeat him... perhaps with some power of Tsojcanth that can be found somewhere nearby...). Obviously this would have a different feel from the original, because the Temple will have been Un-Forgotten, but it would still be interesting in its own way, I think.
In that scenario, they would want to use clerics to try to channel Tharizdun, but in general they wouldn't necessarily have to have clerics to be interested in the idea of using Tharizdun's power to further their ends (which is how I see it in general). Essentially they are just an order of Monks bent on restoring Suel supremacy, as I see it.
On that note, another good idea might be the Forgotten City in the Sea of Dust. You could easily make an adventure based on Gary's novel Sea of Death. Just make the Scarlet Brotherhood the true power there, with the Derro (which are, after all, degenerate Suel pygmies) as under their control. Throw in some Drow, and plenty of wilderness adventuring (as in the novel), and you should have a pretty interesting module. Just a thought. Regards.

Some cool ideas Falconer. Yeah, I think the Scarlet Brotherhood would have to have clerics involved (and not some wierd SB Monk/Priest as I suggested, that would be corney).
