My first impressions are that this is probably the Museum from Another Age level that's been mentioned here and there for ages, or maybe the level where the Nine were imprisoned. I posted over at K&K: "It fits the tidbits of known info for both the Museum from Another age and Prison of the Nine. It is a museum, and Museum of the Gods could be inspired by the City of the Gods, which could mean it’s a sci-fi based level with tech from another age, maybe where Erac got his blasters from the Black Reservoir story. But it’s also ‘of the Gods’ which could be taken more literally, and means gods, and it’s in the right level range for where the prison of the Nine was known to be. The Hashed out areas could be the result of damage that occurred while the freed gods were rumbling. I lean towards the Museum from Another Age option, since I think it the prison area would probably more clearly show nine containment areas."

The museum level is part of the 24+ "branch" or "side" levels but in the "Castle Zagyg" mock up they shifted it into the main leveling.
According to my notes which are not authoritive in any way.
I have been trying to make a stand in dungeon periodically but I never get around to it.

My first thought was this level may have been inspired by the Museum of Man in "Guyal of Sfere," the last story in THE DYING EARTH by Jack Vance. I think you're probably right. I don't think this level is where "the Nine" were encountered - most obviously because there are 78 key entries, and no nine of them appear more obviously prominent than the other 69. I also don't think this was a museum of high tech artifacts, both because there's already another such level (RJK's Machine Level) and because that doesn't really feel like "museum" to me. Instead I suspect this was more like a Natural History Museum with diorama scenes displaying skeletons and stuffed animals in recreations of their natural habitats. The Field Museum in Chicago is probably the most obvious and direct inspiration. Given the nature of the game, the displays were presumably live creatures held in statis and/or animated skeletons, and in addition to exotic animals - elephants, lions and tigers, dinosaurs, etc. - they probably included some fantastic creatures, maybe things that wouldn't otherwise make sense in a dungeon environment - things that would normally inhabit tropical or boreal regions, etc. Since the displays mostly aren't that large there may have been effects that shrink the party down or transport them to a sub-dimension in order to allow them to encounter rocs, sea monsters, dragon turtles, etc. (a la the much later Hall of Many Panes).

This is where I got the idea of the museum being a "branch" or "side" level and those branch/side levels being 24+ levels.

I have a feeling that it might be the Chicago "Field Museum" or based on it. It certainly looks like a recollection of the layout with the semi-circle at the end of the main room.

It can't be the "Museum of the Future" from the LEGION OF SUPERHEROES comics (Started 1958 outside of Gary's comics interests)so that is out but the "Superman Museum" might be up for consideration as its first appearance was 1952: dc.wikia.com/wiki/Action_Comics_Vol_1_164Seems unlikely but he had an interest in lots of characters and Superman was a big favorite so there might be a hint in there.

I don’t think the Nine were here, and I could go either way on the tech, but the title doesn’t seem to fit natural history.

It could be the "dependent on the level and the surroundings" monsters: cyborgs/androids/robots. Metamorphosis Alpha aside those were mentioned two years before that game was even an idea that Jim Ward stole off some guy he knew... Just kidding!

It looks like the museum is three rooms? And the red numbered items are displays within three areas? Looks like there were passages connecting the three display areas, but all the connections appear to be blocked by the hashed 'rubble'. Do you think the red dashes on the south walls of the row of rooms to the north of the display areas are secret doors?

And along the bottom in the southwest corner it looks like T to # 8 and T to #3. Think those Ts mean teleport? Maybe teleporters to levels 3 and 8?

Sorry, I saw earlier but I didn't get a chance to talk. It looks like what you're saying on all 3 points (secret doors, pond and teleporters).
What I noticed is everything damaged is empty. Does that mean something escaped and is around? Also the damage is built in as if there never was another version except it being damaged because the hall lines matches the damaged areas. All red areas have no doors except the red doors (that you pointed out as perhaps secret) going up to North area that has doors.
Th middle section seems totally inaccessible. So either there is teleporting or this is multi-tiered. Or maybe its all force fields.
