I've been hearing good things about this show for years, but just tuned in. It is good enough to recommend. At first I thought it was too over the top, as in trying to cram too many horror tropes into one show. But it is well written enough to draw me in and manage a large cast of characters. It has an interesting take on ghosts.
Yeah, I heard they put a lot of thought into the first season, and when it was a hit, they had to try to repeat that, not always as successfully. I like season one a lot, but it isn't scary, it is more like what I would call playful story telling with everything tying back in on itself, and lots of references and homages... THE AMITYVILLE HORROR, THE OMEN, Freddy Krueger, urban legends like the "Bloody Mary" game, the Columbine and other school shootings, FRANKENSTEIN, THE OTHERS, home invasion, Hannibal Lecter (eating the brains), the Black Dahlia, and I am sure there are some I've missed. It's worth it just for Jessica Lange. Was the KING KONG remake she was in really that long ago? Remember that ad on the back of comic books with Kong standing on the twin towers and holding a jet? After I finish this season, I'm thinking of skipping ahead to APOCALYPSE since I heard they bring a lot of the same characters back, unlike in other seasons when the actors are recast as different characters.
By season, it’s hit or miss. The 1st season was an out of the blue hit, and they’ve never really been able to match it. Some of the stories/seasons since have been good, some not so much. I haven’t watched any episodes of the current season yet.
