"Ostler" is not meant to be understood as what Ostler Gundigoot is.
Ostler/hostler = a man employed to look after the horses of people staying at an inn.
Ostler Gundigoot, however, owns and runs the Welcome Wench Inn, he is not a hired employee. To think of him as an ostler/hostler would be a misnomer of what he is about.
Instead, who he is is a "sterol dogs outing" innkeeper.
The "dogs outing" component, is a short pleasure trip for both the in-town "dogs", as well as out-of-town "dogs" {traveling merchants, adventurers, etc.}. He has attractive staff, offers above average cuisine and an assortment of local craft and fine libations, and varied amenities/accommodations for his patrons. It can be assumed that EGG signals that VOH persons who own dogs patronize his inn periodically or even frequently?
Sterols provide more information about Ostler. Sterols are steroid alcohols, a sub-class of steroids commonly found in human skin oils. Zoosterols are animal sterols. In humans, sterols, as part of the cell membrane structure, perform functions of cellular metabolism and communication, so while his patrons are being fed, he is talking a lot {to "oil" or start/keep conversations going} saying little, and gathering information amongst the "dog" "zoo" of patrons. He is a "cell" to share pertinent information with Jaroo and the town council. Photosterols, plant sterols, have also been indicated as possible cancer fighting agents, so it can be said that Ostler is an anti-cancer agent to the cancerous growth of Nulb.
It is interesting to note sterols are found in animals, plants, fungi {ergosterol}, and some bacteria - which may explain how EGG inserted Zuggtmoy when the decision was made to remove Lolth as the demon captive within the TOEE?

Thats the modern term for "hostler/ostler" but in medieval times it was derived from "hospital" (a place to stay) which is where "hotel" is from. As for Gundigoot, one of Gary's favorite games was BISMARCK by Avalon Hill. The well known commanding Admiral of the operation was Admiral Günther Lütjens. Definitiely, rolls off the tongue like that as the letters "u" in the name have umlauts. So Ostler Gundigoot obviously trying to block allied shipping, right?

Here's another one, a member of the town council:
Associate Rufus = factious ruse
The community of Hommlet is a factious ruse?
Or more likely, it is important for the PC party to realize that the TOEE is a factious ruse.

Yet another town council member:
Magic-user Burne = McBurn-Urge, Aegis
He is very conscious of his duty to protect the village and to watch for evil, but he might burn all the treasure to molten lumps and ashes in the process!
Spells memorized include burning hands, fireball, wall of fire...
Or in other words, an important objective of the PC party is to protect Hommlet by destroying the evil warlock, Falrinth, who is trying to free Lolth {associated with eye of fire symbol}, from imprisonment.

And another town council member:
The elder is also the justice of the peace = magistrate
Magistrate = sterigmata
Small {typically quantity of four} minute stalk-like branches {supporting structures} referring to extension of the spore-bearing cells {basidium}. Consisting of basal filamentous part and a slender projection which carries a spore at the tip.
Antithetical to the VOH elder magistrate is the EEG of the true temple. The branched staff is akin to stigmata. So it is a major goal of the PC party to obtain and use the branched staff.
So there are (4) sterigmata support structures, and (4) spores.
The town council has (8) members, representing (8) VOH factions.
There are (8) temple factions, for the original temple structure = the four elemental evil factions of fire, water, earth, and air. Also Iuz, Lolth, +Igwlf?, and the EEG.

One more town council member:
Captain of the militia = elderly farmer = alderfly + merer
Merer = "being nothing more than"
Alderfly is in the megaloptera insect order, which can be grouped together with the Neuroptera and Raphidioptera insect orders in the superfamily Neuropterida, including alderflies, fishflies, dobsonflies, and snakeflies.
Prey for this superfamily includes the Australian redback {black widow} eggs.
Lolth has been trying to "hatch her eggs" into the VOH/temple area, and this captain/his family, have preyed upon her "forming offspring", or more likely, it establishes the goal of the PC party to prey upon Lolth's "forming offspring."

Next up town council member:
Mytch, note only one letter difference from "Brother" Smyth, so assume Mytch is Smyth's familial brother?
Then we would have Mytch = Smyth's brother.
Thinking about this one still...

I played several Avalon Hill games, but not BISMARCK. Would be fun to try it out one day!

Next up town council member: Mytch, note only one letter difference from "Brother" Smyth, so assume Mytch is Smyth's familial brother? Then we would have Mytch = Smyth's brother. Thinking about this one still... Mytch is cool toward strangers... Cool Mycth = Clooth + myc Clooth = Clooth-na-Bare, Yeat's transmogrification of Cailleach Bheirre. Myc = gene which transforms a normal cell into a cancerous cell. Cailleach Bheirre is a mythical sovereignity goddess/divine hag, a creator deity and weather deity, and an ancestor deity. The Beare peninsula, her home, and she represented by a stone on the peninsula. She is the Celtic crone goddess of winter. She is "the veiled one." This blue-faced hag of winter ages in reverse, from old and ugly {winter} to young and lovely {spring}. Igwlf? Cailleach Bheirre is but one of the alternate names of the Cailleach: Cailleach Bheur Cailleach Uragaig Cailleach Beinne Bric "Old Woman of the Speckled Mountain" Cailleach Mor "Great Old Woman" Cailleach Bolus Cailleach Corca Duibhe Cailleach ny Groamagh Cailleach ny Gueshag (Isle of Man) This sounds like Igwlf and her activity in the original temple of elemental evil, and also her role sinking the Isles of Woe into the Unknown Depths? She leads a sorcerous "cell" that has twisted the normal/healthy elements back towards primordial demonic elemental chaos? So an objective of the PC party is to stunt her cell (led by Falrinth?) that is at work within the TOEE?

Need to work on the remaining town council members:
Druid of the Grove
Chief cleric of the church
And go back to work on Sergeant Ostler Gundigoot, as there is some more to him...

Watch out for that "CB" witch stuff. That was coming down the Irish pipe when I was a kid like it was something new. Creepy.

Interesting also about cool Mytch = clooth + myc:
Clooth can be rearranged to make it = ctholo, which is similar to Cthulhu.
Cthulhu lies in a huge stone structure sealed with the elder sign.
Cthulhu is served by the deep ones as well as his human worshippers.
The Deep Ones have been known to interact with evil men and interbreed with them. This results in human-appearing offspring who undergo a gradual transformation after the age of 21 that causes them to become as the Deep Ones.
So this is what is happening within the hidden temple to the EEG?

I think the Mytch Miller reference refers to that era of the pop marching tunes where the band leader Mitch Miller seemed like the American status quo. Many of my separate relatives came together only in regards to listening to Mitch Miller tunes. Of course, I used to giggle and whisper "Bitch Miller".

Since the temple was last active 10 to 13 years ago, it has left behind some offspring in Nulb, who are now adolescing and showing signs of gradual transformation? When they become deep ones, they will be able to return to the temple and pursue loosing of the EEG?

Many of my separate relatives came together only in regards to listening to Mitch Miller tunes. Of course, I used to giggle and whisper "Bitch Miller". That makes sense why EGG would arrange letters to make the miller's name "Mytch." It makes one think of bitch and other rhyming words: witch, pitch, snitch, rich, hitch, ditch, lich, glitch, stitch, niche. Many of these words can bring to mind a dark evil sense. Probably the most important association would be wicce, Old English for sorceress, female witch. Maybe Mytch's wife or others who are close to him might call him Mytchy? Just as someone close to Brother Smyth might call him Smythy?

EGG's VOH module seems to be a densification of the content of an extensive manuscript of ideas/notes, EGG's ur-text.
Behind this ur-text are several EGG-sourced interwoven myths, that EGG worked/interlaced into an adventure locale, that was densified into the delivered VOH module.
We don't have EGG's manuscript, but if we can correctly work back from, most importantly the VOH module, and secondarily the TOEE module, to the correct EGG-sourced myths he employed into his manuscript, then it could be possible to craft a more fitting TOEE module than the one FM finalized?

So here's a question: how many source myths did EGG employ in crafting his manuscript for VOH and TOEE? It may be as few as four, or as many as eight - can they be specifically named? If so, can we now name them, or do we need to dig/search a little more thoroughly?

Also, I am looking into how EGG created adventure locales? What is his structure to make this happen? If I can learn his structure used, that should help me to best create other adventure locales, aspiring to EGG's quality standards.
For this thought, I am looking first at the Inn of the Welcome Wench. It is the hub of Hommlet, which EGG spun out from to create a masterpiece adventuring locale...

I think, now this is theory, they wanted to move away from Blackmoor and the plastic castle toy (Siege of Bodenburg) set up that was popular with all of them for Castle Greyhawk. So my theory is the pics of Trampier that he did of the Moathouse are what was supposed to be Greyhawk based on the plastic Bodenburg thing. And perhaps the "chi rho" shield is a version of the "crooked P" insanity rune from the 1980 boxed set which we all know the "madness rune" is the holy symbol of Zagyg. In the 1983 boxed set the insanity rune is altered to look like squiggles. Here is the link where I compared 1980 to 1983 runes and glyphs: justkeeponrollin.blogspot.com/2016/11/portentuous-runes-and-glyphs-study.htmlIts a good theory but is it true? Who knows? Some of these old timers just say anything.

Some of these old timers just say anything. The DAT artwork on the original VOH module looks like the shield has 8 trumpets radiating from the fiery eye, and the downward pointing trumpet looks like it has an inverted triangle at its bell? The chi-rho christogram has but 6 radiating with the rho "P" at the apex? So is the inverted triangle on this shield intended to convey an "inverted" path to the EEG via the elemental earth temple {since the earth temple's symbol is a triangle}? Does the "inversion" mean the path is via sorcery through the depths of the abyss/Lolth's domain, which the access to the EEG's prison on a "fiery eye" sun/star is obtained? Igwlf, aka the Cailleach, has passed via sorcery into the abyss/Lolth's domain in order to free the EEG?
