I finally saw this, and I enjoyed it but had some reservations. I don't want to give away spoilers. Amy Adams and the cast did a fine job, and it has an original angle so it is worth seeing. But I'm not sure it makes any sense. There seems to be this trend going on of "make it epic and personal at the same time" which I can understand because you want the audience emotionally engaged. But similar to INTERSTELLAR, it seems like the story is trying to push your emotional buttons while hand-waving the scientific concepts involved. It is like these movies are saying: "Are you crying yet? Don't think about it too hard. Just go with the feelings."
I like the theme of uncertainty about the intentions of strange monsters. Are they benevolent? Neutral? Or what? What if their psychology and language is so alien that we are unable to communicate effectively? Is it better to be belligerent when uncertain? Those are the ideas the movie grappled with that I most enjoyed. Uncertainty is scary. A prolonged period of uncertainty raises the tension level. Humans aren't good at living with uncertainty.

We just saw this a few weekends ago, and really enjoyed it. In addition to the good story and characters, the soundtrack was also excellent (picked that up!).
It also reminded me a bit of Contact; I've not rewatched Interstellar yet, so I can't really compare the two beyond general impresssions (I wasn't terribly impressed with Interstellar at the time).
Allan.
