Has everyone seen the new trailer? Any thoughts on this one?

Looks good its the GODZILLA (2014) guy so I pretty much left the theater for that one pleasantly surprised so this looks like it might be good as well. When I waited for the Mark Hamill livestream at STAR WARS Europe Expo (and failed) they had a ROGUE ONE panel which showed the director was looking for a full STAR WARS immersion and it shows from the clips.

Finally saw this. It wasn't bad. Not great either. For the most part I have no complaints with the acting. I hated the blind force-monk. And Some of the architecture is just silly. That's a Star Wars constant, ever since that tractor beam on/off switch on a ledge in the middle of the Death Star. Now there's the "Master Switch" on a desk in the middle of a landing field, and the space message transmitter switch on an observation platform at the top of a record storage tower in the middle of a military base. I liked the characters, and the battle scenes. Some more Vader would have been nice.

I also finally saw this -- today. I thought it was just okay. The last third was the strongest, with all the action scenes and fighting. But you're right, it is like in order to explain the Death Star's big weakness, they bring in all these other "master switches" that also could use some explanation...
They got the aesthetic down as far as the look and sounds and designs of the original trilogy. And there were a ton of Easter Eggs in the background for the nerds. I kept thinking a good subtitle for this movie would be: "I OWN ALL OF THESE STAR WARS TOYS, AND I WANT TO PLAY WITH THEM!"
I thought the new characters were kind of weak, the story was just okay, and I didn't like CGI Tarkin or CGI Leia, and I was surprised I didn't like Vader's scenes. Just didn't seem like Vader to me. "Don't choke on your aspirations"?!?
But otherwise, they got the Star Wars universe down pretty well... It felt a lot like a SW video game come to think of it, what with the the master switches, tall towers, ledges, deep pits, etc. SW of the video games is a 'master switch' universe!

I didn't mind the Leia CGI, since it was just the blip, but having her in the Corvette engaged in this huge military action seemed forced. The Tarkin scenes bothered me too. I think the prequels set the bar so low that I enjoyed the last 2 movies more than I would otherwise. It's like it's part sigh of relief.

Finally watched this on Netflix. CRASH!!! BURN!!! Seriously, the accents/vernacular of the actors were terrible. They should have subtitled this whole movie. The locales/scenery looked okay but the way they wholesale inserted STAR WARS throwaway characters (squad leaders, etc)/concepts (Vader's castle, death squads, etc) to justify this "post-modern multi-cultural night in the retro-77 Star Wars theme park" made it hard to go along for the ride. Hayden Christensen is retroactively starting to seem a lot better. I was thinking this was STAR WARS MARY SUE II the whole time because with inaudibility/projection of the dialogue I just couldn't get into this "script ride". My hope for this movie was way too high and without the dynamics of the old timers the other Disney probably wouldn't be that great either. GET BETTER ACTORS! I wonder if they'll be selling that giant Peter Cushing head as a hologram in the future?

To me ROGUE ONE has a fan-made feel to it. As in, what would a billionaire fan with an average mind do with STAR WARS... He'd play with it like a toy set! He'd show off every toy, and try to tie his story in to the Original Trilogy as much as possible. He'd be respectful of the lore without adding anything too significant. And he'd restore Darth Vader back to imposing villain status to wash away the emo-Anakin flavor. But it's a disposable story and all the main characters are dead so there's nothing to build on... They could have called it ROGUE ONE: A DISPOSABLE STAR WARS STORY.

I think the director had a good run with Godzilla but the cast sustained "the Godzilla". Shallow Hollywood-izing this with the Rock, Mark Wahlberg, or Will Smith would have made this melt through the movie theater screen.

Oh yeah, it could have been far worse.
The attention to detail in ROGUE ONE does give me hope for better SW movies in the future, in contrast to THE FORCE AWAKENS in which the details were the weakness.
