Spurred on by all this old timey BASIC crap going on lately, which in turn was spurred on by watching STRANGER THINGS as well, I've been reading through the BASICs and comparing them to AD&D. One of the things that never comes up is DOES A TORCH DO COMBAT DAMAGE?
I did some looking online and DRAGONSFOOT had something about it many moons ago:
[BtB] Attacking with a torch?
Frank Mentzer (ExTSR) chimed in with a nothing or monster specific responses.
OD&D 1974:
Under mummy, it says mummies are vulnerable to ordinary kinds such as a torch.
In 1977 BASIC HOLMES:
HOLMES doesn't compensate for variable damage but when he mentions oil the wight and the mummy get half damage.
In 1977-1979 AD&D:
Nothing about torches except price, illumination and duration. Complete description of oil combat in DMG and PHB has who can use it. Flaming arrows are mentioned under water combat with 10 being as as effective as a 5HD fireball (D3?).
VAULT OF THE DROW (1978):
SECRET OF THE SLAVER'S STOCKADE (1981):
In 1981 BASIC MOLDVAY:
Torch is a weapon type with 1D4 damage
In 1983 BASIC MENTZER:
Torch is a weapon type with 1D4 damage

VAULT OF THE DROW (1978):
this action will subject up to 7 of them to attack by 2-5 fine web strands flung from above unless all who step into the area are Drow-sized and wear Drow cloaks. Each such attack is equal to a spell of the same name (and if burning torches are available, the strands can be flamed off with only 1-4 hit points of damage per character webbed).50' above, in a network of webbing which covers the whole roof, lurk 7 giant black widow spiders (HP.: 31,28,27,2x25,24,22). After flinging their web strands, these monsters will hasten down to attack the party
SECRET OF THE SLAVER'S STOCKADE (1981):
Those caught will free themselves in a number of roundsequal to
19 minus the Strength of the character. Fire or a burning hands
spell will destroy the web, but will do damage to those inside the
web. Oil or a torch will cause 2-8 points of damage.
