Definitely an appeal to the game play for sales and in general its just cooler because its not overloaded with dialogue.
If this came out as a module do you think it would have been in WG6 ISLE OF THE APE detail?

I would guess something like the EX modules. Those are the most sandbox style adventures I can remember EGG writing.

A couple thoughts on the story: I love how they ran away from the giant crab. It's a very accurate portrayal of action in Gary's campaign. When you hear stories from his games, the PCs ran a lot, and avoided wandering monsters whenever possible, since they were a giant resource suck with no real rewards. Also, I don't know what to make of how easily the Sorcerer was overcome. He seems like he should be the "boss" of the level, and there should have been a little more action in the take down.

My assumption was that the sorcerer was surprised, and therefore completely overpowered before he could respond (in fact that's in part why I made my MU higher level, with some items to help prevent surprise).

Yeah, I guess that's a good way to convert mechanics into fiction.

The Black Reservoir story was written during the redesign dungeon era. From the text it seems it was a side level set just to the north of the eastern dungeon levels (the elves guard the eastern stairs, they enter from the south, they find more steps to the south). I think in a model based off the single dungeon progression, and using CZ as a guide, the reservoir is probably set to the east of the primary dungeon levels. My map was based on the story, but I might alter a bit based on my dungeon layout.
