The most interesting is probably the reference to "the world where giants ruled" which is probably where the Castle Greyhawk level leads.

Yeppers. In all honesty, the "reset" I did was mostly because I got several new players (started in the late 80s/early 90s), and they knew Greyhawk Wars/ From the Ashes; but I and the remaining "old schoolers" didn't want to drag the politics, as it were, into the gaming scenario. Thus, I stated: "This is what happened..." and we got on with B2 and other adventures that instilled the fantasy part of the game, rather than the war game aspect.

*bump* This seems like an appropriate thread on this board to add this nugget. Perusing the Gen Con program database, I noticed a Greyhawk miniatures battle tournament run by Tom Moldvay that I hadn't come across before: Title: Iuz Battle for the Northern Flaaness [sic] - not sure if the typo for "Flanaess" is just in the database or if it appears that way in the con program Year: 1982 Original Order: 124 Game: 1982-3049 Long Description: An exciting fantasy miniatures battle in a WORLD OF GREYHAWK setting. Duration: 8 Hours Game Master Names: Tom Moldvay Location: Wyllie Main Place Being run in the summer of '82, it seems likely that this battle recreates or advances the story lines that Gary described in Dragon #56 (Dec 1981). At 8 Hours, it must have been a pretty involved battle! Database entry: best50yearsingaming.com/programs/catalog/1982-3049Also posted over at DF in the Gygax's Greyhawk forum: www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/posting.php?mode=edit&f=33&p=1897901and at Knights and Knaves Alehouse: knights-n-knaves.com/phpbb3/posting.php?mode=edit&f=40&p=239245

Yeah, I saw that on the K&K forum and thought it was pretty cool. Interesting to see Moldvay running it. Would be great to have more background info.

I found some more weird on that website. I typed in "1984" and "AD&D". If you put in "greyhawk" it just gives back tons of "glophawk". This is everything that I thought seemed "official" in 1984 but I recommend going through it to see the mentality of the games.

I was at Gen Con that year. I pre-registered for a couple of events and the DMs were terrible. I had a much better time with the walk ups I got into. I sat in on this giant Star Fleet Battles game, I was introduced to Chill at that con. Somebody from TSR gave me the complete line of Marvel Super Heroes books.

Its such a different mentality. I had recently dealt with someone that, I mentioned this before, haven't played D&D with since 1983 and not really talked to about it in all that time (saw briefly in 85) and its like two different game roads. His road was "something is wrong stay away its too expensive for this bad stuff and this used to be cool." and mine was "something is wrong lets fix it and keep buying. Oh god where are all these weirdos coming from? Gary... help meee!!!". You look at convention listings now and its like not even on the same planet as we were on but those 1984 listings seem to remind me of that time. Who knows? 1985 was a bad year for TSR but it had to come from somewhere. 1984!

Did you see the new D&D book announced? Mordenkainen’s Tome od Foes? Looks pretty terrible.

Actually I can’t say it looks terrible. I’ve like lost of the 5E stuff I’ve read so far. It’s just that Sean Reynolds, reimagined, bald Mordenkainen cover is so disappointing.

I saw the cover of that. Its more landgrabbing nonsense obviously because it doesn't convey anything. Because of the million dollar circumstances of D&D those Gygax characters will never flourish because its always going to be gutted and focus shifted to the contributors who didn't do anything remarkable.
The only future that I see for the characters is perhaps a tribute once all the rights dissolve.
