I got a Kindle Paperwhite for Christmas. Do you guys have any Kindle book recommendations? Any books that are particularly good deals in e-book format?
I already found some classics available for free. I started reading TREASURE ISLAND on Christmas Day -- never read that one before!

I haven't had a recommendation on anything new in a dog's age. Last science fiction reads were second hand recommendations "I heard this was good.", etc.. And they didn't pan out. I've had a sci-fi political tale that was given to me about ten years and everytime that I approach its a sleep aid.

There are a ton of good free books, but you may have read many of them. The John Carter and Tarzan books come to mind. H.G Wells books. Some R.E Howard stuff. I read some Mark Twain stuff, Dickens. Ben Franklin's autobiography. Treasure Island. I can't remember many now. I'll check my Kindle when I get home.

20 years ago bookstores were everywhere and i miss the browsing. I went to a bookstore a few years back and it was catering to the least common denominator of teen series, manga, self help and cooking! People say just go to Manhattan. But I've never enjoyed Manhattan browsing it was always aggressive.

I use www.gutenberg.org/ regularly, and Baen released all of their James H Schmitz reprint collections as freebies too.

Thanks for the recommendations. I now have a ton of free books on my Kindle. The Gutenberg site helps me locate some as well. A few of interest are by James Branch Cabell, Lord Dunsany, and William Hope Hodgson, as well as some Arthurian stories I haven't read in a while.
This really helped wade through the crap on Amazon.com. Most of the free stuff they want to push on you is bottom tier fantasy, romance, and perhaps worst of all: fantasy-romance.
I also miss browsing at brick and mortar bookstores...
