Has anybody played it yet, or even read one of the books? I signed up for the playtesting, but lost interest pretty quick. I have no idea what the publised rules are like.

I haven't played it, but I did leaf through the Player's Handbook, and I listened to a few podcasts of people playing it. I had heard that WotC was going to back to the roots to make it like 1st/2nd edition again, but my impression is a simplified version of 3e.
If someone ran a 5e game, I'd give it a chance. But browsing the new PH, I didn't feel inspired to buy it, with its digital art and R. A. Salvatore and Weis & Hickman Dragonlance flavor text quotes...

I didn't hate 3E. There were a few points that really chafed, but for the most part I thought the core system was pretty good. So 3E simplified doesn't sound too bad. But I agree with the art and flavor text. Not my style at all.

I didn't hate 3e, either, I was mostly just indifferent to it. It reminded me of the Diablo 2 video game, with all of those skill trees. I liked Diablo 2 a lot -- it just wasn't D&D. The first Diablo game was closer to D&D, in the feel and the game mechanics. I'd give 5e a try if someone was willing to walk me through it. But when I was leafing through the new 5e PH, I felt like I'm not really interested in putting a lot of effort into learning new game mechanics, or a new system. I'm still happy with 1st edition AD&D, customized with a few house rules! That's still what I prefer to play... P. S. Basic rules and character sheets for 5e are on the Wizards of the Coast website: Wizards of the CoastP. P. S. After looking more into 5e, I appreciate the effort they are making and the big epic adventure module hardbacks they are putting out. I just don't care for the flavor.

I picked up the 5E Starter Set. And it's almost a 1E/2E/3E hybrid. The ability score bonuses are simplified and standardized like 3E. The DC, skill checks, etc. are 3E, but the skills themselves are more like codified 1E ability check house rules. There aren't long lists of skills and feats. There are some common checks that are listed under the relevant ability scores, but for the most part it's the DM deciding what ability and what the target number is. Like 3E the default rate of advance is too fast for me.

If anybody case to check it out without buying the set, WotC just released the 5E SRD. At lower levels it plays pretty close to older versions of D&D, but the differences get more pronounced as you gain levels.
