I've seen several references, but haven't delved beyond the headlines. I just 'friended' a Gene Weigel on Facebook. Was that you. The profile's awfully sparce.

I saw a thread speculating about whether Trampier died on the Dragonsfoot forum, but the posters didn't seem certain about it. Even his death seems shrouded in rumour and uncertainty. I think it must be true that it really is Dave Trampier, the TSR artist, who has died -- since he was known to have been living near Carbondale, IL based on that somewhat surreal article with him as a taxi driver. I found that article to be so surreal because it didn't make any reference to the fact that he was an artist, even in passing. He didn't mention it. The reporter didn't mention it, or even seem to know it. But to me it was like finding out someone like Picasso just quit art and started driving a cab. He was, in my opinion, THE artist of AD&D!

I'm trying to keep that profile as D&D prestine as possible so its strictly "game Gene Weigel" only i.e. no relatives and superficial work/social friends mucking up my "dungeon time". So any game people are welcome to friend me on there. I think so far I "liked" GYGAX MAGAZINE so I'm getting that feed on there.

Way back, when I was hunting down people to hook up with Gary, I couldn't find anything on him except that article. Gary must have sent people around and it must have pestered the shit out of him. In that regard, I feel horrible because it seemed I was being a total asshole in retrospect. I found a lot of people through e-mail searches and the personal ones that I wanted to find (long lost friends, old players, etc.) turned out so badly that I don't want to find anyone anymore!

I think back then, when I was looking for Trampier, I was looking for recreating something in the now that most likely would have blown up in my face. Nobody knew (or knows?) the behind the scenes furor that happened at TSR because there was always some perspective mucking it up. And at this point I could not give a crap.
The bottom line was Gary didn't own TSR anymore so why would Trampier work with people who didn't even want his talents when Gary was there? Just look how he was phased out in DEITIES & DEMIGODS (1980).
I think if I can imagine critically for a moment if he had "come back" for Zagyg it might have been an "updated" baroque-looking mess with heavy inks. Or some kind of stylized "page break" type art like we saw for the central American (QUETZALCOATL) in DEI & DEM and the pieces for the TITAN boardgame.
Well, we'll never know but I wonder if he continued WORMY a little that might be very interesting.
--- as an aside, I've stopped drawing for ages at a time and I used to draw 20 pages a day at one point. So I can relate. I rapidly drew some crap for the hell of it the other day and it wasn't half bad. Heh, I think that talking to Gary Gygax for almost ten years hexed my ability to draw fast because of anxiousness that I didn't have in that area before! Now I need that quick draw back.
